CASE STUDY QUESTIONS
Evaluate the impact the ipad using Porter’s competitive forces model?
In Porter’s competitive forces model, the strategic position of the firm and its strategies are determined not only by competition with its traditional direct competitors but also four other forces in the industry’s environment. iPad enters the marketplace as a new entrant to compete with Amazon for the over e-book pricing and distribution, availing the text books on the ipad using special software, providing newspapers online, and replacing CDs and DVDs for music labels with the famous iTunes as substitute products. iPad is using Porter’s strengthening suppliers’ intimacy increasing publishers price for the e-books from $12 to $14 which is much higher than the purchase price offered by Amazon which is in average $9.95. The iPad is making an offer to the publishers to act as an agent selling the books of the publishers rather than distribution. The iPad is also pleasing the newspapers by enabling them with application to provide the newspapers on line and also the newspaper readers are happy to have the news papers online so that they can choose the articles they want to read rather than purchase of bulky pages of the newspaper so that customers are enjoining the technology and we can say there is customer intimacy too.
We can also see the iTunes application for downloading music as product differentiation and low cost leadership since customers are pleased with downloading the music at lower cost and with choice of choosing the music rather than buying the whole album.
Apple efforts to struck deal with text book publishers to avail school text books on the iPad which could be seen as a focus by the company on the Niche market.

With competition on the rise, the retail book industry has gone through numerous changes over the years, creating few opportunities and more threats. New developments in technology in the past decade and more businesses expanding their product offering have created intense rivalry between on-line based organizations and storefront organizations. “Intense rivalry among established companies constitutes a strong threat to profitability.” (Hill & Jones, 2010). Organizations such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble not only compete with each other, but also must fight to gain market share over retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club.…

Porter's five forces of competitive position analysis is a simple framework for assessing and evaluating the competitive strength and position of a business organization that formed by Michael E. Porter of Harvard Business School in 1979. Therefore, strategic analysts are often to use Porter’s five forces to comprehend whether new products or services are potentially profitable when they’re entering into new player. By understanding the changing needs of the market, Amazon has identified the appropriate product that can satisfy its customers. Reading is a hobby for many people and many desire to do so but find it impractical carrying books around and find they have little time to read them. Porter’s four competitive strategies are described as an organization that can focus on being the cost leader, or it can focus on differentiating its products or services from those of the competition. Further, the organization can use the cost or differentiation strategy across an industry or it can focus its strategy on a particular industry segment. By launching IPAD, in January 2010, and releasing it into the market in April, Apple introduced a potential new product category in computers which is likely to change the way consumers interact with their devices. IPAD was able to meet a changing consumer need which saw them preferring to ‘swipe a finger across a touch screen’ instead of using a keyboard. More than 15 million units were sold in the first year alone. In a move which surprised many market watchers, Apple launched IPAD2, in March 2011, slightly more than a year after the first IPAD was released onto the market. Surprisingly!, because many marketers would have thought that IPAD1 had not yet gone through its full product life cycle. However, this move by Apple is in response to the changing competitive environment which has seen growth in the interest of tablet computers from competitors. Analysts predict the computer tablet market to treble in size in 2012. By launching IPAD2, Apple has left competitors playing ‘catch up’ in a growing segment with consumers hungry for new products. There are a dozen or more competitors with rival tablets to IPAD2 likely to be launched in 2011 from competitors like Microsoft and Toshiba.…

Bezo’s decision to develop and to deliver the Kindle show systematic and intuitive thinking through competitive strategy to assure the success of the company. Competitive strategy refers to a strategy that is designed to create value for customers by providing lower prices or unique features not offered by rival organizations. This is proven based on Amazon’s quarterly filing ending March 31,2010 when their net sales had increased to 45% in the electronics category. Jeff Bezo, CEO of Amazon.com says that “ as we continue to offer increased selection, lower prices and additional product lines within our electronics and other general merchandise category, we expect to see the relative mix of sales from this category increase!..” Another reason would be seeing an opportunity only Amazon.com can give—long-form reading to be digitalized. They have analyzed their strengths and capacities that helped them develop a new innovation in the market. From there, they were able to produce a refined product called Kindle that has the ability to review and remember more what a person reads follow people of interest and allows one to see their Public notes and manage his books, highlights, and notes.…

Technology has been moved towards advancement day after day bringing new and improved devices and system. People are always on the verge of inventing something new and exciting. About a decade ago, mobile phone was rarely used by people but now everyone has a smartphone with all the possible gadgets in it like camera, video player, internet and more. Talking about disruptive technology which almost replaced any other company in new innovation was Apple. Apple launched iPhone which was one of the major successes in disruptive technology because it provided every bit of comfort to its user while using it. When apple launched ipad in 2010 there was a huge marketing and hype about its new innovated technology in the market. It was 10 inch tablet which runs on IOS (iphone operating system) as any other apple product. The ipad only runs apps from the Apple App Store. There are thousands of these applications available in the iTunes from movies, songs, games and more. The ipad is not a necessity like the smartphone which do have the same gadget however it improves the quality of life of its users. Ipad has been used by the first author in two units offered by the Department of Statistics at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia): a second-year Introduction to Probability unit (PROB) and a masters-level unit Mathematical Background for Biostatistics (BCA), delivered through the Biostatistics Consortium of Australia (Simpson, 2009). The use of technology, particularly the use of ipad, has supported a different mode of teaching in these two units that takes account of the general needs of the students and it enables students to be responsive to their individual requests. The ipad has been used as a way to involve, and motivate students through high-level presentation and communication tools. It has changed the approach in learning, experience simpler and deeper. Students will now experience the most amazing textbooks they’ve ever…
