Inventory Management help
This problem entails knowing Inventory Control Subject to known demand. Based out of the book Production and Operations Analysis-5th edition ISBN 0072865385 which is almost Identical to 4th ed.
A local machine shop buys hex nuts and molly screws from the same supplier. The hex nuts cost 15 cents each and the molly screws cost 38 cents each. A setup cost of $100.00 is assumed for all orders. This includes the cost of tracking and receiving the orders. Holding costs are based on a 25% annual interest rate. The shop uses an average of 20,000 hex nuts and 14,000molly screws annually.
I need help to:
A- Determine the optimal size of the orders of hex nuts and molly screws, and the optimal time between placement of orders of these two items.
B--If both items are ordered and received simultaneously, the setup cost of $100.00 applies to the combined order. Compare the average annual cost of holding and setup if these items are ordered separately; if they are both ordered when the hex nuts would normally be ordered; and if they are both ordered when the molly screws would be normally ordered.
Answer Summary
Solution contains calculations of :
1. EOQ
2.Carrying cost.
3. Ordering cost.
4. the optimal time between placement of orders .
Answer Preview
...Annual usage/EOQ = 15,000/5620 = 2.669 or 3 orders
Ordering cost = number of orders*per order cost = 2.669*$100 = $266.9
(Note that inventory and ordering costs are same confirming optimality of the EOQ)
Annual cost = $266.95 + $266.9 =

Shelby Shelving is a manufacturing firm who produces shelves for grocery stores. They have two types of shelves named Model S and Model LX. These two models have three main steps in production which are: Forming, Stamping and Assembly. Forming and Stamping departments can produce both models on same line whereas Assembly lines are different for each model. Firm’s problem is to determine how much to produce monthly Model S and Model LX in order to maximize the profit. The decision depends on the optimal quantity that must be produced for each model. The key issue is the marketing department of the company and the controller of the firm have conflicts about Model S. The marketing department think that they should cut back Model S production because its’ cost is higher than the selling price which make them having losses but Controller disagreed and he argues that they will be worse-off with lower production because Model S has a contribution to make overhead. The solution is the optimal quantity to produce each model at which the total profit will be the maximum.…

③Third step is to estimate costs. Since the average number of CMI pads need per year is 204,750(question 2), the number of CMI pads per month is about 17,000. So, the additional capacity cost is $5,025,000 because additional equipment is added at a cost of $75,000 per 250 pads per month of capacity {(17,000/250 – 1)x75,000}. The production cost varies depending on purchasing a permanent tool. (Exhibit 6)Without permanent tool, it has to pay $7,543,040{148.12x17,000+5,025,000(additional capacity cost)}. On the other hand, with the permanent tool, manufacturing cost would be only $6,251,060{69.18x17,000+50,000(price of permanent tool)+5,025,000(additional capacity cost)}. Compared to 'without permanent tool case ', it is reasonable to produce pads ‘with permanent tool’. So the total manufacturing cost would be $6,251,060 and the manufacturing cost per pad goes to $367.71(6,251,060/17000). Since Cumberland managements want to take manufacturing cost to be 40~50% of the price. From this, we can set the price range of from $735.42. to $919.275.…
