I have wanted to go to college since I was twelve; I believed it would be exciting to go to school as an adult. When I became a teenager I thought I had decided that I wanted to be a school teacher, but as we grow these things change. I then attempted college for something completely different but was unable to finish due to tragic circumstances. Now at twenty-six years old I have found what I truly want to do with my life. I took a career interest profiler, a program that provides you with possible occupations that match your interests. After taking the profiler, I find I may slightly disagree. However, my results did show me new things about myself I did not know. From these results, I have created some SMART goals to help achieve my ultimate goal.

Growing up, I had the thought in my mind how I would love to go to college one day and become what I wanted. This thought came to me when i was in middle school. I was talking to my English teacher Mr.Sweetnam and he told me how he didnt really understand the whole college thing here in the United States that the college students attended. i laughed at him, because its not that things are different that the studies at schools where he came from. Its not as hard as he thinks , and its not as easy either. While telling him my plans he really gave me more insight on what i wanted to do later in life. He thought me things like ," Marlisa make sure you choose what you want to do in life carefully, because you dont want to do anything you will regret later. " I took this information in as I left middle school the information Mr.Sweetnam told me came into effect.…

To say that I dedicated numerous amounts of hours deciphering the purpose of why I’m going to college would be a lie. For years I have always thought that college is somewhere you just go after high school. I believed that it is only somewhere you go to start your career and in turn make a lot of money. In fact, this “purpose” is what has been institutionalized within U.S. citizens under this Capitalist system. We are told to go to college so we can get jobs where we can make money, buy a big house, start a family, and live the lifestyles we have always dreamed of. For a very long time this was my only goal in life: to go to college so I can get a well-paying job to afford the lifestyle that I want to live. I never put much thought into what…

I found dreams I never knew I would want to accomplish so desperately, which is another reason I started taking college classes my senior year through a running start program. I have found myself valuing all of my work and dedication much more, because being independent has definitely been a beautiful episode that forced me to be an adult. I see myself going to a four-year school and find a job where i can operate with kids and people facing struggles. I love sociology and have always thought of myself working to help others. I have started a new passion towards history and society change over time which has made me strongly perplexed about a career choice. Due to my indecisiveness, I continue to take as many classes as I can, to clarify my decisions, and hope to find a perfect career for…

My response was that I wanted to be a waitress. As a child, growing up in a family of restaurant workers, I found nothing wrong with my response. In my freshman year, my class took a field trip to a YMCA college fair. Once again, I was asked the same question, but this time in front of several students. My new response was to be a Police Officer. Sophomore year I considered the fields of counseling or teaching. However, Junior year all my previous aspirations went away and became interested in nursing. Near the end of Junior year, I couldn't quite make up my mind of what I wanted to do. When I put determination and effort into something, I discovered something new about myself which makes it hard for me to have a goal to work for. Being a first-time generation student puts a lot of pressure; the need to make your parents feel proud puts a lot of weight on a person. As a Senior I’m currently undecided, but I still have a goal: helping others in any way or form. In our generation, people look up to individuals who have a professional job. I grew up believing, the only way to have an impact on others is by having a high profession. Society has shown us that having a high education, and a well paid job, is the key to being…

Hello, I am currently a junior in college. This has been my third at Houston community college. I initially started off by wanting to be a Dental Hygienist but later I started to realize it was not something I was passionate about. I soon came to the conclusion that I want to be an elementary school teacher. In the beginning I was thinking about money rather than a degree I would be dedicated to. I graduated high school back in 2011 and to be honest college was never in my panorama. After graduating I got my first job at Family dollar and that was my wake up call. I realized that I would not be able to live an abundant life getting paid minimum wage. I knew that if I wanted to make a difference in my life, I would have to go back to school.…
