Intro to Social Work
Topic: School Based Social Work
Story:
During my freshman year at College, I was mad aware of a job opening at a local public school on Staten Island. Some of the college’s students spent their first semester volunteering there for their freshman learning community. By the second semester, all the volunteers left because the atmosphere of the school was challenging. With all of the free help gone, the school put out a flyer for paid after school help positions. I jumped at the opportunity for a paid job in which I only had to work a few hours each day. I had spent time in high volunteering at my neighborhood public school, so I had experience working with children in a school setting. I am also from a low income, ethnically diverse neighborhood, so what my peers deemed as a “challenging neighborhood” made me feel right at home.
By the spring of 2007, I had been working as an after school tutor and recreations counselor for over a year. My place of employment was Public School Number. The organization I worked for is a non-profit company called, which runs a out of the school. At the same time I was also debating entering the education dual major program, which required me to do student teaching. Within the school I had many roles which made me a visible member of the community.
I fell in love with the children I saw everyday. I slowly but surely worked my way up to greater levels of responsibility. I eventually received my own group of children to regularly supervise. On a Thursday afternoon, one of my children began tugging on my uniform shirt. I immediately turned my attention to the child. She was a first grade student I will call “Tammy”. Tammy began to cry. Crying is not unusual in an after school program that deals with children, so I was not alarmed but I did try to calm the child. Tammy was holding her stomach so I asked if she had a tummy ache. She nodded yes. I tried to encourage her to use her voice. I wanted Tammy respond to me by speaking so I

I can clearly remember from a young age trying to help my younger family members with their school work. I enjoyed helping people, as I progressed through life, I liked coaching members of my team but never pursued it any further until one morning I woke up and decided that I no longer wished to work in a bank. I longed for a change and whilst I was on maternity leave, I looked into the possibility of entering teaching. I cannot afford this I thought, I must be mad wanting to leave a perfectly good job and go back to university, oh well I'll just apply and see what happens..... 6 months later and I'm holding an acceptance letter, was I really going to do this.... YES.…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

My name is Regina Goforth-Lewis. I was born and raised in Michigan. As a young child, I went to four different elementary schools. I ended up graduating High School from the last of those schools, Southfield Christian High School. It was here that I decided I would eventually work with youth in some way. My life took a small detour before I got to that point. I attended the Oakland Community College shortly after graduating, however, decided to work full time and pursue a different career avenue: Retail Management. Although this was exciting and perfect for me at the time, I knew it was not my calling. Around the age of 22, I decided to enroll back to in college part time and follow the original dream of working with young people. I studied under the Social Work/Mental Health field. I never completed the program to receive my Associates Degree; however, I do have 66 credit hours accumulated. During this time, I loved college and my internship, which later became a fulltime job at the H.A.V.E.N. I worked there as a Supervised Visitation Specialist for many years. While working in the social work field and also in the communications field, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I always knew if it was feasible I would want to be able to stay at home with my children for as long as possible and I was fortunate enough to be able to do this for almost 13 years. Along the way I held down several part time jobs to earn extra income for the family, these jobs always included working with youth to some degree, such as a shift supervisor at the local Parks and Recreation Center’s concession stand or at the Elementary School where the children attended as a lunch room monitor. I also volunteered time at my church as a Sunday school teacher, a senior high youth advisor and a Deacon. I read to students at the library and taught American Sign Language (ASL) to hearing children. After 15 years, my children’s father and I divorced. I currently find myself as…

After I graduated from high school May of 2010, I took some time to think about the career path that I wanted to follow. A couple months after I graduated from high school, I applied for a job at the Early Explorers Head Start in Anamoose, ND. I did not get the job that I applied for but that was okay because the next day I got a call from the School District offering me another job. They offered me the job of the assistant substitute teacher in the Early Explorers classroom. I accepted the job offer and started working in September of 2010. I loved the job so much. There was also something special in the job for me, my baby brother was also in that class. My experiences have been very rewarding so far and have inspired me to want to continue along this path and seek further knowledge in the field. It truly does mean so much to me knowing that I have helped those children learn so many new things in life that will help them with their social and cognitive development.…

Changing careers after having worked as a hair stylist for 25 years was scary. My education was limited; I had my high school diploma, a few credits at a junior college, and a license from the Board of Cosmetology. In order to make a career change I had to take inventory on the experiences I had learned throughout my career as a hair stylist and manager of a salon. I had several managerial jobs during my career; I learned how to work with people from all walks of life; I tried to model the work ethics of the establishment by working alongside my employees as much as possible. I had learned to communicate and listen to the client’s needs when they sat in the styling chair. One of the most important lessons was being discreet and not gossiping about the client’s business with others; they often times needed someone to listen to them about their day or problems they had. Now the question was finding work that would satisfy me as much as being a hair stylist. I decided to apply at local school districts subbing as an instructional aide positions, receptionist or any other type of clerical positions available; I needed that one on one connection with people. I didn’t like being confined behind a desk, too limiting; when the instructional aid position opened up with special need teens, I tried it and loved it. I have been employed for seven years now and loving it. I experience the one on one with students, my people skills are continually growing and the satisfaction of doing something good for others is empowering. My job entails many responsibilities; it is never monotonous. I find that I continuously use the four function of management, I am the senior aid with the severely handicap department, knowing how to communicate to my co-workers what is expected in this position is essential; making the needs of needs of the student priority is always our focus. I understood how the external influence what happen internally within a…
