This laboratory is based on a series of famous experiments that were conducted in the 1960’s along the rocky shore of Washington state, in the northwestern United States…The nine species in this laboratory’s simulated rocky intertidal area include three different algae (including one you may have eaten in a Japanese restaurant); three stationary (or “sessile”) filter-feeders; and three mobile consumers (Keystone Predator Student Workbook). In this simulation there are nine different species. The Nori Seaweed, Black Pine, Coral Weed, Mussels, Acorn Barnacles, Gooseneck Barnacles, Whelk, Chiton, and Starfish. The Nori seaweed, Black Pine, and Coral Weed are all algae, which means they live in damp environments and are plant like and have chlorophyll. Having chlorophyll they make their own food through photosynthesis, the fact they can make their own food makes them autotrophs or producers, and are the lowest on the trophic level. The Acorn barnacles, mussels, and gooseneck barnacles are the filter feeders of this environment they do not move. They are the herbivores of this environment and the primary consumers on the trophic level. The whelk, chiton, and starfish are the only mobile species in this environment. Also they are the only carnivores in the environment and are secondary consumers on the trophic level.
Hypothesis
The chiltons eat all the algae (Nori seaweed, Black Pine, and Coral Weed) in the environment. The whelk eats both barnacles (Gooseneck barnacles and the acorn barnacles). The starfish eat the mussels and the gooseneck barnacles. With this in mind I took out the secondary consumers, to see what would happen with the primary consumers if they had no threat of being consumed by predators. What happened was the mussels became better at attaining space and moved the algae and barnacles, therefore becoming competitively dominant. this makes me wonder if I introduce the starfish (the predator to the mussel) will the mussel take over

Mellita quinquiesperforata, commonly known as the sand dollar, is a familiar urchin on Florida coastlines. The species is flat and disk shaped that nestles into shallow sandy waters to protect itself from waves and predators. Dissodactylus mellitae is a parasitic crab that feeds on the spines of the hosting sand dollar where it remains its entire life. This study was arranged to observe the distribution patterns of crabs on various sizes of sand dollars. We hypothesized that the larger sand dollars would host more crabs because of the extended surface area available. We also predicted that the presence of adult sized crabs would limit the number of total crabs on the hosting sand dollar because of the larger size and resource demand leading to intraspecific competition among the crabs. Intraspecific competition occurs when members of the same species compete over limited resources considered vital for survival. These resources can be food, space, light, mates, anything necessary for the survival and reproduction of the individual. In our study the factors of interest are space and food.…

    Cownose Ray Evolution

Although evidence has shown that there is a recent change in the increase of the cownose ray that has caused a large boom, it's Well known that the cownose ray is a predator of shellfish when the water becomes warm. The marine systems caused by the removal of sharks remain misleading, due to the significant declines in large coastal sharks in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, which caused dramatic increases in abundances of smaller elasmobranchs (referred to as “Macropredators”) over the predation release. The large coastal sharks decline allegedly led to an order of large scale increase in the population of Cownose rays. Thereby the ever-increasing feeding of the cownose ray has led to the concerns for the shellfish populations along the U.S.…

The simulation when all predators were present. The reason is because when predators, specifically starfish, are present the mussel population along with populations of all the rest are able to be controlled. This results in mussels not taking over using their competitive dominance allowing other prey to thrive so that the other predators can survive and be part of the ecological diversity.…

maenas is cannibalistic, especially in postlarval and juvenile stages (Moksnes et al., 1998). This cannibalism tends to be density dependent and self-regulates populations of C. 5 maenas (Moksnes, 2004). Mortality by means of predation by H. sanguineas serves to further thin populations. C. 5 maenas is also very efficient in selecting habitats with low risk of predation (Moksnes, 2002). H. sanguineus populations are at higher densities in rocky intertidal areas, the same refuge habitat preferred by juvenile C. maenas. In response, C. 5 maenas has shifted habitat usage to areas with reduced refuge (Jensen et al. 2002). 5 This habitat shift also creates a shift in diet in adults from primarily consuming mussels to primarily consuming red algae (Griffen et al., 2008). Reduced refuge creates risk of predation by seabirds, fish, and other predators. Dietary shifts of C. 5 maenas in the presence of H. sanguineus could reduce C. maenas populations in two ways. First, this shift in diet decreases nitrogen consumption which slows growth rates of C. 5 maenas, potentially extending the time susceptible to size dependent predation (Griffen, 2008). In the presence of H. sanguineus, C. maenas typically forages for red algae (Chondrus crispus) containing 0.4%-1.4% nitrogen with higher values in winter and lower in summer (Chopin and Floch, 1992). Otherwise, C. maenas would prey on mussels (Mytilus edulis) containing 7.7%-9.6% nitrogen with higher values in spring and lower in late…

    Neon Tetra Interaction

    • 411 Words

The Paracheirodon Innesi or the neon tetra is a freshwater fish that is native to the streams of South America. In captivity, Neon Tetras are one of the most valuable species in the ornamental fish trade. They are known for their hardiness as well as flamboyant coloring (Champan et. Al 1998). The prey in question is the Daphnia, a large group of small planktonic crustaceans which can also exist in almost any freshwater body (Ebert 2005). The predatory nature of the Tetra will be put into question in two scenarios. One where the Tetra can easily find its prey in a two-species interaction with the Daphnia. And another where the Tetra will have to spend time and energy searching for its prey in the presence of a third species Synthetica Plantae or the common Plastic Plant. The Synthetica Plantae acts as a third species and acts to modify the interaction between the Neon Tetra and the Daphnia. As the Tetra is known to be a visual predator (like most fish), the visual interference by the Synthetica Plantae is to be expected. In the presence of Synthetica Plantae, the Neon Tetra is expected to have less successful attacks on the Daphnia compared to a situation without the plastic plants due to the visual interference by the Synthetica…

Hunting and escape strategies of predators and prey are probably the result of a coevolutionary arms race (Dawkins 1999). There is an economic approach that the scientific community can use to look at what kinds of prey preds choose to eat. Elner and Hughes (1978) found that when given a choice of different sized mussels, shore crabs Carcinus maenus selected the prey that gives them the highest rate of return. Very small mussels were easy to open but held less nutritional value, and large mussels held much nutritional value, but were too time consuming to break open and so were selected against. The shore crabs were seen to select intermediated sized shells and incorporated suboptimal prey into the diet only in proportion to their relative abundance, where they were chosen against as much as possible.…
