Intervention In Social Work
As the quote by Sydney J. Harris in the class lecture states, “Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better”, treatment and intervention is not an easy task. However, the social worker can apply valuable skills to help the process. With a proper engagement, a client can feel worthy of a social worker’s time and expertise, and feels more hopeful that change is possible and life can be better. It is important to note that there are multiple treatment approaches and that it may be necessary to change interventions if a client is not progressing. Treatment application should vary from client to client and should take contextual factors and the context of the problem into consideration. I feel as though the variance from client to client is either overtly addressed or covertly addressed in every class period. After listening to the song “Demons” and realizing that it is a privilege to learn of another’s demons, or challenges, and it comes with a great responsibility to respect them and their vulnerable sides. It’s important for the social worker to realize that this is a normal part of the helping process and, as the class PowerPoint suggests, get excited about it and see it as a source information. Their view of the challenge can change as the start to realize they have a problem and start to develop a desire to change. Additionally, how the social worker interacts with a client has a significant impact on their motivation and it’s important to express empathy, develop discrepancies, roll with resistance, and support a client’s self-efficacy.
