Interpreting The Painting 'View Of Toledo' By El Greco
The title of this work is View of Toledo by the Spanish artist El Greco. The painting depicts the landscape of Toledo, Spain, the city where the artist worked and lived for most of his life. This is a very significant work for several reasons: it is considered to be the first landscape in Spanish art, one of only two surviving landscapes painted by this artist, and because this artist rarely painted non-religious subject matter. View of Toledo is considered to be one of the most dramatic and individual landscapes in the history of art. The painting is not an accurate representation of Toledo. The artist rearranged the buildings. The perspective of the city is the eastern side as seen from the north. The cathedral would not be visible from this …show more content…
The inner conflict of each artist is represented in both works. The two works were painted more than a century apart but the similarities are remarkable. Neither landscape is ordinary. Both evoke a lot of emotion and many elements of the composition are similar. The sky is dark and almost violent looking. A storm is brewing on both canvases. Another similarity is that the church is the most visible element of the architecture in both works. The calmness of both cities contrasts with what is happening beyond the boundaries of the respective cities. However, there are some differences as well. Nature is not as prevalent in The Starry Night. The works are painted in different perspectives. View of Toledo is painted on a diagonal and while the mountains in the background of The Starry Night are slightly diagonal, View of Toledo appears much more three dimensional. The Starry Night is more stylized than View of Toledo. If a storm of this magnitude were to occur, the sky would be more similar to El Greco’s. Van Gogh’s is somehow more calm and welcoming than El Greco’s. The architecture also plays a role in setting the mood. In View of Toledo, the sharp lines combined with the atmosphere make the city appear harsh and unwelcoming while the town van Gogh painted is more calm. The way that Toledo is constructed on a hill while the one in The Starry Night is flat exemplifies

The most striking and most visually rich aspect of the painting is the towering architecture that lends symmetry and balance to an otherwise asymmetric setting. The Romanesque architecture, wholly inappropriate for the Temple in Jerusalem, serves to emphasize the classical influence of the Renaissance: a large central arch rises high above Mary’s head, flanked by enormous columns with Corinthian capitals and by two smaller arches, each slightly less than half the height of the central arch. The façade is clearly reminiscent of ancient Roman triumphal arches, as most of the scenes carved into it attest. Receding into the background is a system of nine (visible) Ionic columns supporting arches that form the inner wall of the temple.…

Both paintings have a form of a black cat. In painting Good Lord Gives Peace, the older man is shoeless and outside. The only other things, other than the older man, in painting is a single withering corn stalk behind him and the black cat in front of him. In painting Good Lord Give Me Peace, the older man is naked in his room and surrounded by an empty table, an old bed, a cat on the window, wallpaper peeling off from the walls and newspapers. The other thing that makes this two artwork different involves color. Pretty much as Vincent Van Gogh, I likewise thought amid his period that present-day life, with its steady social change and concentrate on advancement and achievement, estranged individuals from each other and from themselves. As we all know individuals experiencing an unbalance mental condition as Van Gogh did were not in contact with the truth. Concerning myself, it is difficult to center when I drink alcohol so contrasting it with Van Gogh mental condition must had likewise been troublesome for him to center which is the reason he paint expressionism conceptual. When comparing Vincent Van Gogh's " Starry Night "painting lines to Sol Lewitt's The Wall Drawing No. 681, the lines are in opposition with each other. In the " Starry Night "painting the lines of the sky are vastly wavy and flowing. The lines of the buildings in the painting are traditional straight. Vincent Van Gogh in this painting is providing you an image that he has had during his period that he was in an asylum. When you look at the painting "Starry Night," the lines in the sky are very unstable, they are all over the place and full of emotions. We can tell that the artist was having a difficult time with his feeling, that he was unstable when he painted this part of the painting. You can see how contempt the artist was when he painted the buildings. How much at peace he was with himself, yet with the sky we do not see the same peace. The sky is not peaceful, yet the buildings are. We can see that the artist Vincent Van Gogh was fighting with himself and it show in his painting" The Starry Night." In "The Wall Drawing No.681," you can see that the lines that the Lewitt's used was straight and exact lines. In the painting, the lines seem to be mathematical. Why? Because when these paintings were made they came from emotions based on how you are feeling at that given moment. Paintings made by Vincent Van Gogh. “The Starry Night”. 1889. Oil on Canvas. Figure 1.10 in “Living with Art”. Even painter Edvard Munch. “The Scream”. 1893. Tempera and casein on cardboard. Figure 4.35 in “Living with Art”. Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream has a lot of comparisons with Vincent Van Gogh's art Starry Night. Both paintings were painted near the end of the period, during the fin de siècle, using bright embroidered colors and simpleminded figures and shapes. Both artists struggled with mental-illness during their lifetimes, but these paintings are some of the most reproduced and famous pieces of art in creation today. These paintings were made to express emotions and feelings felt from their own life. Although they bear superficial similarities, the differences between Van Gogh and Munch are…

Domenicos Theotocopoulos, otherwise known as El Greco, was born in Crete in 1541 and died in 1614, Domenicos was a talented Cretan painter, architect, and sculptor. He was given the name El Greco, translated literally as "the Greece", because he was born on the island of Crete in 1521 and at that time Crete belonged to Greece. El Greco lived on the island of Crete until the age of 25 when he left to explore the world. In Venice, El Greco worked under Titian who was considered the Great Master of Venice. After a couple of years in Venice, El Greco moved to Rome and studied the works of Michelangelo and Raphael. By 1577, El Greco settled in Toledo, Spain where he lived the rest of his life. In Spain El Greco mostly painted pictures for religious foundations and portraits. A large amount of El Greco's paintings were made for Toledo and its neighborhood where he produced many versions of his most famous pieces during his career. Although El Greco's art had started to become manneristic, which can be defined as an artistic style of the late 16th century characterized by distortion of elements such as scale and perspective, it was still greatly influenced by the Byzantine-Greek religious style. El Greco announced his Cretan origins by signing all of his artwork with Greek characters. El Greco had also received a commission from King Phillip II for the Escorial which is a group of many complex buildings located thirty-one miles northwest of Madrid. The Escorial was the conception of King Phillip II and includes a convent, a church, a palace, a library and a mausoleum for the Spanish monarchy. El Greco painted an altarpiece of The Martyrdom of St. Maurice for the church at the new monastery-palace of El Escorial but King Phillip was not fond of the work and placed it in a different part of the building and hired another artist to paint the replacement for the altar. The king disliked the work because of the emphasis of the characters in the foreground. El Greco…

The work was completed by Raphael between 1509-1511, and is generally agreed upon to be the second work completed there. Originally titled Causarum Cognitio (Knowledge of Causes), it is commonly referred to as Raphael 's masterpiece (Wikipedia, The School of Athens).…

-In all four of these pieces of art we obviously see that they have a common theme of rivers. It is strange to think that a theme such as a river can be depicted in so many different ways. The conclusion of comparing these pieces of art is that art can be used to communicate. Now that I have read and studied this more communication is a really good way of describing what art really is. Harvest at La Crau

While observing both pieces of art one can understand that they share a common theme of humanism. Sloan’s The Greenwich Village focuses more on the busy city life of midtown New York. This fulfilling painting illustrates lifestyle at that time from every aspect. In plain view you see slightly rundown buildings, and small mediocre businesses. If you look off in the distance, you notice an extremely lit up, and lively part of town. Transitioning to Van Gogh’s Harvest at La Crau the observer can immediately recognize that sense of humanism, but in a totally original way. Van Gogh uses corresponding primary and secondary colors in his painting to put reference on the time of day illustrated. The artwork seems to take place during the late morning or early afternoon when the sun shines directly on top of the landscape. The bright colors depicted give off a sense of warmth and happiness toward the painting, in turn exhibiting a busy and very productive day.…
