Interplay In Football
The game of football (AFL) is one that requires a variety in movement patterns and intensity efforts based on positions and gameplay situations. With the variety movement patterns and efforts interplay is a huge part of the game with a constant change in the dominant energy systems between aerobic, and anaerobic systems. AFL requires players to also be able to perform a number of fitness components at an elite level, which can be tested by completing a number of fitness test.

Player movement and efforts will vary hugely based on the players position, midfielders are required to run all over the oval whereas defenders and forwards are generally only required at either the forward or back 50m (Dawson et al. 2004). Focusing on midfielders individually

Due to the fact that the game requires contribution from all three energy systems depending on the period of time and the intensity of the effort certain energy systems will be dominant (AFL Schools- Energy Systems, 2016). The constant change in dominate energy occurs throughout the entire game as players jog and walk using the aerobic system before sprinting using either the ATP-PC system or the lactic acid system before resting again using the aerobic system. It is then also important to test during and after to see if training is working and see the amount of improvement made (Topend Sports- Benefits of Fitness Testing, 2016). When completing test again it is important to keep factors such as weather, time and place the same to get a clear indication if improvement has been made. Test used that relate to the needed fitness components are the beep test and the 40m sprint. The beep test is a test of cardiovascular endurance that requires players run 20m on beep signals and make it before another beep as shown by figure 2 below. As the levels increase the time between beeps decreases meaning athletes have to increase speed (The Beep Test, 2006).
