Interpersonal Relationship and Gatsby
The movie The Great Gatsby has a strong focus on relationships and their development throughout the whole film. This movie has a particular relationship that I will focus on. It is between Jay Gatsby and Daisy. Their relationship is a complicated one that consists of a love triangle between three people. Now there are different stages in interpersonal relationships. I learned of the different stages from a psychologist’s webpage. His name is George Levinger and he spent time researching the different stages that go into a relationship. According to Levinger, the first stage is making an acquaintance. This is the getting to know each other stage, or the meeting and becoming friends stage. Daisy and Gatsby met when they were young before Gatsby went off to war. They met at a party at Daisy’s house and instantly knew they liked each other after talking about themselves. The second stage is called the buildup stage. This is when the two individuals become more trusting of each other and begin to know each other more. During this stage, the individuals can also develop passion and feelings for each other. Daisy and Gatsby developed feelings for each other right away. But Gatsby had to go away to war and he was gone for five years. However, they wrote love letters with promises to always be together during this time. The third stage in interpersonal relationships is the stage in which two people decide to either get married or stay lifelong friends. Trust is essential for this stage to last a lifetime. Now Daisy and Gatsby told each other they would marry when Gatsby got back from war but Daisy instead married someone else before Gatsby returned. They both did have trust in each other, Daisy was just torn in what to do. The fourth stage is deterioration. Not every relationship passes through this stage. This is when a lack of trust or compatibility causes serious tension and problems in a relationship. When this happens, the individuals either decide to bring the

The turning point in ‘The Great Gatsby’ happens in Chapter Seven, in the Plaza hotel in New York City. This is when Gatsby’s American Dream starts to crumble around him because Tom has unearthed the truth about Gatsby’s wealth and causes Daisy to run back to Tom. Even though it is evident that Gatsby’s dream is not going to come true, Gatsby still believes he will fulfil it. The conflict between Gatsby and Tom has been apparent since their first meeting; their main conflict is over Daisy. In Chapter Seven the tension comes to a tipping point, caused by Gatsby forcing Daisy to lie to Tom that she never loved him and also by Toms unveiling of the ‘real’ Gatsby. Gatsby is rejected by Daisy when she tells him that she ‘loved him too’ when he hears this he feels his idea that Daisy only married Tom for money not for love is shattered and his disappointment is evident. “Oh, you want too much!” Daisy is overwhelmed by Gatsby’s demands saying that he holds her to such a high standard that she will not be able to achieve. Daisy is also weak and cannot live with Tom’s revelations about Gatsby.…

During relationships, people can act differently whenever that certain person is around. Gatsby falls under that, my reason being is evidence from this quote, “His heart beat faster as Daisy’s white face came up to his own, he knew when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable death, his mind would never romp again like the mind of god.”(117;ch.6). That quote is mentioning that Gatsby always seems to act differently around Daisy, and can change his attitude in a second…

The Great Gatsby is a book filled with twists and turns of events from beginning to end. It involves a love/hate relationship triangle. The two characters I am comparing and contrasting are Tom Buchannan and Jay Gatsby. Both of these men yearn for a relationship with a lady named Daisy. These characters are similar because they each want to earn Daisy’s love; yet, they are drastically different.…

Jay Gatsby, undoubtedly the most love-stricken character in The Great Gatsby, has shown moments of both hopeless romanticism and over-obsessiveness. He has based the past five years on a woman whom he has met only once and might never meet again. His unrealistic dream of someday courting this “golden girl” has clouded his mind and made him act only in pursuit of this fantasy. Jay Gatsby is a pathetic character because he allowed himself to be consumed by his illusion that he and Daisy might ever end up together.…

Betrayal was another trait that destroyed relationships in both novels. The first example of betrayal in The Great Gatsby is when Daisy runs over Myrtle. Obviously the death of Myrtle was an accident, but she left Gatsby out to dry. Daisy runs over Myrtle during her emotional breakdown caused by her husband Tom and Gatsby. Gatsby allowed Daisy to drive his car home to make her feel better. This quote (“But of course I’ll say I was” pg.114) said by Gatsby shows how much he really cares about Daisy. He is willing to take full blame of the hit and run as well as the murder of Myrtle for Daisy. Daisy is totally betraying and using Gatsby. She thinks it is fine to get away with murder and leave her innocent ex-boyfriend to take all of the blame. Daisy does nothing but betray Gatsby…

The first relationship introduced in the novel is Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Tom is a very powerful domineering man, very self-centered and self-absorbed. While Daisy is a charming, beautiful lady, with a thrilling voice, she is very self-centered as well. Tom and Daisy's relationship is undergoing stress. When Daisy notices that her finger is hurt she says, "You did it, Tom… That's what I get for marrying a brut of a man, a great big hulking physical specimen (Tom interrupts) "I hate that word hulking…even in kidding." "Hulking," insisted Daisy. (P 16) Daisy knows how to push all of Tom's buttons and how hard to push them. Daisy tells Nick how cynical she is about everything, she shows her views in the statement "She told me it was a girl and I turned my head away and wept… all right I'm glad it's girl. And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." (P 21). It's rumored that Tom is having an affair, "Tom's got some woman in New York." (P 19), and from what Daisy says she would just rather not notice what is really happening. Daisy and Tom never seem at peace with each other, just in an oblivious state where nothing can change them. They know "their place" is together; it suits society, they are perfectly matched. Daisy goes astray with Gatsby. "As he (Tom) left the room again she got up and went over to Gatsby and pulling his face down, kissing him on the mouth…You know I love you." (PP 122-123) Daisy uses Gatsby to rebel against Tom's infidelity, but would never even consider leaving him, especially for an old flame. They are so materialistic; they except their flawed relationship as normal.…

He imagined his life with her and she was the only one he had eyes for. He still believed she still loved him, even after five years and she was married to Tom Buchannan. The narrator, Daisy’s second cousin, Nick Carraway happens to live right next door to Jay Gatsby. Nick and Jordan attend one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties on the weekend and somehow Gatsby figured out that Jordan knew Daisy and asked her for a favor. Gatsby wanted Nick to ask Daisy over for tea and then he would just happen to be passing by. When Gatsby and Daisy saw each other for the first time in five years, it took them both by surprise. I feel as if Gatsby felt as if he could just come back into her life and start from right where they left off. How could she simply drop everything in her life just because someone from her past came back into her life? I feel in this situation, Gatsby was flawed and Daisy was being more…
