International Report Card On Public Education Summary
In “International Report Card on Public Education,” Andrew Parkin examines the public education system. His report closly analysis different factors contributing to public school systems. He addresses how different social factors can influence a school’s achievement and the functions schools perform within the Canadian society. Throughout his repot the author provides evidence for his argument thoughtfully through various statistics. One of the main subjects discussed is the impression some may have on weather Canada’s education system is becoming weak. Through his research Parkin argues that Canada’s education has been declining, not because of performance but rather due to economic influences. Therefore, implying that those who continue their education are likely to be more successful in life. Although, this may be true it is important to examine whether these graduates are working in their area of study or if they have acquired different positions, if so how are those with higher educational backgrounds being influenced by their former education? Consequently, Parkin fails to address that acquiring a post-secondary degree is not the only factor considered when applying or a position. In reality, employers are not only considering the education one gets within a classroom but also the education on receives through experience. He also doesn’t provide us with the statistics of how many of those who are more likely to have stable jobs hold master’s or doctorate degrees.
In summary, the report “International Report Card on Public Education,” by Andrew Parkin allows the reader to discover the different factors that contribute to an education system. Through his overall detailed comparison and examination, he is able to address misconceptions and apply reasoning as to why Canada in it’s the current educational

    This is evidence that employers are beginning to only look at the degree rather than considering “how able or informed the applicant may be” (Jacobs 45). Jacobs put it into perspective universities are teaching for the purpose of credentials and not education. These institutions of higher education are not providing students with the fundamental skills and crucial knowledge necessary to succeed in the work force of their profession. This is greatly ironic as in the attempt to qualify and ensure students can find a job after they graduate, they are only hindered and left without necessary skills that would enable them to prosper and succeed in that real-world work environment. As outlined by Jacobs, it is apparent that education is not the main focus as the experience of education has remarkably changed. This includes the quality of faculty in which “professors lack the time and energy they could once devote to personal contact with students” (Jacobs 49), to the nature of testing that now, “came to consist of ‘True of false?’ and ‘Which of the following is correct?’ types of questions, fit for robots to answer and to rate, rather than stimulants and assessments of critical thinking and depth of understand” (Jacobs 49) I agree that when education is replaced by credentialing, we lose the authenticity and quality of learning that is provided by universities and colleges. As a result, the students graduating suffer the consequences of not being given the proper knowledge and skills necessary to prosper in their field and the work force. With this replacement of education with credentialing, there has also been a loss of motivation of and interest from the students enrolled in these rudimentary programs.     Williams, which discusses the use of segregation of First Nations people and placing them into separate educational institutions in order to assimilate them into society, namely the Residential School System. As well as the abuse within, and mental illness caused by, that system. The paper also looks at the educational policies inflicted on the indigenous people during the time of state formation/nation building, and its ties to it. There is a strong point made on how education was the main tool used to assimilate young first nations people because it forced the acquisition of the conquerors language and customs .     As federalism gives provinces the ability to make their own decisions, there is an opportunity for them to be unequal to the extent that the education levels of individuals impacts their futures considerably. When focusing on a report comparing education levels between the provinces, including, Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia, each scored an A+, while Newfoundland scored a B when comparing high school attainment (“Education Provincial Rankings”). This large gap suggests that there is an education difference between provinces. A difference as large as this implies that Newfoundland needs to encourage education on their citizens during high school years as their university attainment score is a C, compared to Ontario scoring an A (“Education Provincial Rankings”).
