International Division Of Reproductive Labour Case Study
In this essay I am going to be defining the differences between the new international division of labour and the new international division of reproductive labour. I am going to be using specific examples to show how both transform existing ways of thinking about gender hierarchies, personal identities, women’s work and mothering. It is very important to note that although both the new international division of labour and the new international division of reproductive labour are fairly similar in the overall theory, there are very important differences that separate the two and make it very important to incorporate both in a sociological study.

This productive labour force includes work such as household chores; the care of elderly, adults and youth; the socialisation of children and the maintenance of social ties in the family (Parrenas, 2000). These activities are generally relegated to women, until recently. Class-privileged women free themselves of the mental, emotional and manual labour needed for the cultural and social upbringing of children, by hiring low-paid women generally of colour (Parrenas, 2000). The international transfer of caretaking is a social, political and economic relationship between women and the labour market (Parrenas, 2000). This relationship is based on the class, race, gender and citizenship of the women (Parrenas, 2000). In the new international division of reproductive labour you look one step deeper into the division of labour. Race in the division of labour is an international context where it is a transnational division of labour which is shaped by global capitalism, gender inequality in the sending country, global south, and gender inequality in the receiving country, global north (Parrenas, 2000). This hierarchy of womanhood that is based on race, class and nationality creates a system of reproductive labour among women. They are in fact earning more money in Hong Kong as a domestic worker than they would in the Philippines doing a middle-class occupation (Oishi, 2005). The ‘nannie-chain’ is the growing need for quality child care, which female migrant labour has become the answer. Asia is now both a major destination for female migrant labour and a source of labour to the world (Oishi, 2005). Filipina domestic workers usually can’t afford the higher costs of maintaining a family in the industrialised countries, thus forcing a long distance relationship with their families (Parrenas, 2000). In the Philippines it is not unusual for the father to nurture and care for their children. But when you consider that not all migrant Filipina domestic workers hire domestic work for their own homes, some fathers are forced to give into the renegotiations of household division of labour purely because of the migration of their wives (Parrenas, 2000). As stated earlier, the migrant Filipina domestic workers are usually middle-class resulting in unequal relations with les privileged women in the Philippines (Parrenas, 2000). This is purely because they can afford to migrate and earn ten times the better salary than the poorer Filipina domestic worker doing exactly the same thing

    It was the political journalist, George Megalogenis who wrote in his book Fault Lines that it was ‘wogs and women’ who laboured to create modern Australia (2003, p.28). Megalogenis posits ‘wogs’ as the low paid, unskilled or under-skilled ‘working’ class, post World War II migrants. The Marxist principle of a reserve army of labour – which includes unskilled as well as casual or precarious labour and women – proposes that, as supply of labour is constant and abundant; the wages of this group are kept low. Horizontal inequality has resulted from women’s double burden of being underpaid for performing the same private work as men as well as the seemingly sole responsibility of unpaid, domestic labour. Concurrently, ongoing engendered disadvantage is on display in the high levels of vertical inequality whereby opportunities for the advancement of women within market society and the broader economy are stifled. These issues are further propagated by state policies that, for example, attach parental leave payment levels to the lower income of the household further relegating women to the lowest pay levels and entrenching the inequity that the gender pay gap creates. Attempts at economic empowerment and longer term prosperity that come from uninterrupted engagement in the workforce as enjoyed by men are further sabotaged by this disincentive. This essay will argue that both classism and gender based inequity have intersected to create serious financial and social disadvantage to women.     According to Pateman, men consider woman natural dependence, always in need of defending and male protection. In the welfare state, this notion of protection relates to economic stability through non-domestic employment, a form of citizenship. Employment gives employees a stake in the larger society, a feeling of a civic community. In the private sector, the male is the breadwinner and protector of the family’s societal status. In the contemporary era, women hold jobs and professions, but are still excluded from citizenship. Women face high segregation and pay inequity, which occurred because “capitalist economies are patriarchal…[and] are clustered at the lower end of the lower end of the occupational hierarchy.” Women have been excluded from the labor force, but now that they are forced to undertake unskilled and low paying professions or other professions that perpetuate their roles as nurtures or caretakes. However, her criticisms of the welfare state seem to discredit the successes it has in alleviating some of the burdens of property.     Firstly one must look at the division of domestic labour and conjugal roles. Conjugal roles refer to the roles performed by men and women in relation to housework, childcare and paid work. Traditionally men had the instrumental ‘bread-winning’ role which the women had the expressive role (childcare and primary socialisation). Feminists say that the traditional division of labour is neither natural nor beneficial to women as their expressive role is unpaid and taken for granted. However different feminist views disagree on who benefits from this unpaid labour. Marxist feminists would argue it is capitalism that benefits most as wives keep their husbands happy and therefore they are left with a content workforce. On the other hand, radical feminists would argue that men are the main people to gain from women’s oppression as we live in a patriarchal society.
