Today’s global companies are looking for managers and employees that are motivated and has the right ability to move forward. Tel-Comm-Tek, (TCT) manufactures a variety of small office equipment such as copying machines, dictation units, laser printers, and paper shredders. The company is headquartered in the U.S., but has an Indian subsidiary. Steven Jones, managing director of TCT’s Indian subsidiary, has just resigned and needs to be replaced. TCT prefers to fill executive by promotion from within the company. TCT uses a mix of home, host and third country nationals. In additional, TCT rotates its managers among its foreign and U.S locations. TCT Headquarter sees international experience as an important facet of executive leadership. The Asian Regional Office selected a professional committee to nominate the new managing director for TCT in India. The committee identified six candidates Tom Wallace, Brett Harrison, Atasi Das, Ravi Desai, Jalan Bukit Seng, and Saumitra Chakraborty. The best candidate for the managing director position for the Indian subsidiary of TCT is Tom Wallace, a 30-year TCT veteran. From an ethnocentric point of view Wallace is the best man for the job he has the edge over the other candidates due to his longer tenure with TCT and relevant experience with managing a plant of similar size in the U.S and would be best able to integrate TCT’s operations into a local situation. He has expressed interest in foreign assignment and has a proficient performance rating. On the downside, Wallace and his wife speak only English and the local management may resent the both of them. Brent Harrison would also work out as managing director for TCT in India. At 40, he has spent 15 years with TCT, running line activities and supervising staff. His superiors consider him highly poised to move up into upper-level management within the next few years. Harrison has
