The third and final strategy I hope to use in my learning need is work with the interprofessional team in educating nurses on the ward. Completing this final strategy will build on the interprofessional collaboration of the floor. This can be described as a way of maintaining effective teamwork in professional groups by impacting the patients, family and the health care team (Zwarentein, Goldman, and Reeves, 2009). As a future novice nurse it is important to understand the competencies related to the role I will pertain as a RN. According to the National Interprofessional Competency Framework, the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) speaks of, the competencies and how they benefit interprofessional collaboration (CIHC, 2010).…

In almost any capacity the demands of life can be both hectic and challenging. In light of this, the processes by which life is lived, shared and nurtured must involve organization, effective communication, and collaboration. This simple concept is true of life on almost any level but it is especially true when concerning healthcare. As such, it is important to look at the effectiveness of communication and collaboration within the health care system. This consideration is important because effective communication and collaboration within the health care system has a direct correlation and obvious potential impact on the quality of care provided to the patient. Due to the natural course of dementia commonly patients are diagnosed with behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD). Whereby their behaviours show strong correlation with the degree of functional and cognitive impairment such as agitation, irritability, depression, anxiety and sleep or appetite changes (Cerejeria, Lagarto & Mukaetova-Ladinska, 2012). Patricia had shown signs of agitation and restlessness once being administered into hospital and it is important that we prevent and minimise her BPSD through key management principles. In order to minimise the progression of BPSD it requires an approach that includes psychiatric symptoms, management of Patricia’s physical wellbeing and environmental factors (Tanaka et al., 2015). For instance, reality orientation allows Patricia to familiarise herself with her surrounds and situations. This is important as often people with dementia have difficulties in adapting to their environment which in return the environment has to adapt to them. BSPD can be prevented if we provide verbal prompts, reminders, explanations, visual cues and repetition of information (Edberg, Moyle & Chan, 2012). An approach can involve making proper…

Communication is indeed a necessity to effectively provide care for patients. Reading Noah’s story from an ENT specialist point of view, there were a lot of communication barriers that could be avoided to prevent this tragedy from happening. I did notice that four of the sub-competencies of the Core Competencies for Interprofessional collaboration practice were not strictly adhered to on the part of the ENT specialist. These sub-competencies are RR6, CC1, CC2 and CC3. Clarification of each team member’s role in providing care to Noah was not communicated well. If there was clear clarification of roles by the ENT surgeon to the other team members Noah would have not been discharged earlier. There was no utilization of any effective communication…

Strong personalities, differences in work ethics, and a sense of urgency for admissions to get their students on the scheduling block are the basis for these problems. This issue also exists in that each department does not have a complete understanding of what the other does and who should be doing what. Conflict arises when one department attempts to tell the other what to do or impose policy on the other. I also believe there is some residual resentment among the departments because admission receives a comprehensive training as well as the pay is much higher than the operations side. The biggest reason m for the animosity is that the admission advisor deals with getting the student in the door and that can take up to a couple of months whereas, the SSC’ have the student from the start of their classes until they graduate which can be two to six years depending on the degree. The SSC’s are responsible for student retention which can be very difficult and is a huge responsibility. SSC’s are tasked with being an academic advisor, pseudo psychologist, cheerleader, and also has to deal with parents. This can be emotional draining for the SSC, especially when a student has a severe issue personally. The SSC’s feel insulted that the pay is so much lower than the admissions so conflict is present from the…
