Integrative Care Case Study

Andersson S, Sundberg T, Johansson E, Falkenberg T. Patients' experiences and perceptions of integrative care for back and neck pain. Alternative therapies in health and medicine. 2012 May 1;18(3):25.
• The researchers try to examine the impact of integrating integrative approaches into the more traditional western based pain management plans. 15 patients received integrative care vs. 11 patients in the traditional intervention group. Authors found improvement among the integrative arm compared to the traditional arm.
• Comment: Good article, but as noticed in the limitation section of the article there are many concerns in the design that affect the overall quality of this trial. As a physician I feel obligated to base clinical decision on the best available evidence.

Why is this lacking in the US where pain also a major disability cause? What policies needs to be changed?

• This recently published article examine th potential barriers that face every team in the health care setting. It defines the expectation and provider resources for team leaders in addressing these barriers.
• Comment: This article needs a follow up studying the most proper effective and affordable way in addressing the identified barriers. How can we address inconsistency in definition, composition, training, or maintenance of health care teams? How about the cost which is a major barrier to both private and government institutions?
