1.0 Abstract (Summary)

Integrated Library System (ILS) or also known as Library Management System (LMS) is an enterprise resource planning system for a library. Since the introduction of Integrated Library Systems (ILSs) in 1970s, it has growing rapidly but suddenly comes to a halt because of the advancement of web technologies. The weakness of ILS had been exposed horribly by Content Management System (CMS). So, in order to overcome this challenge, ILS vendors are trying to develop more competitive next generation of ILSs. This paper discusses on the framework of the future of ILS. Based on the framework, the independent variables are the platforms offered by vendors, and the characteristics of cloud computing by the platforms. The dependent …show more content…
With the advancement of technology, the economic impact and the changes occuring to the library collections a library must have a good ILS to complement this needs. The development of ILS in libraries also should follow a few features in order to make it relevant for installation at a library (Xiaohua, 2014).

With the shift in paradigm towards web-based e-resources, it has become a huge task for libraries to keep up with this trend. They must ensure that the service given to users were top quality while maintaining the standards of the library. The management system used by the library also must be able to handle many tasks for ensuring the effectiveness and the efficiency of the workflow inside the library.

Based on Grant and Zlatos, ILS such as WorldShare Management, Alma, Sierra, Intota, Open Library Environment (OLE) and Open Skies must have a few features which would help improve the competitiveness of the library. It must also fulfill the needs of the user and the library itself. Cloud computing has a few features which could differentiate any library system with the others. (Grant, 2012 & Zlatos, 2009)

There are a few levels or stages for evaluating the ILS from its vendors before choosing which fulfill the needs of usability by the libraries and its users. The first stage is the access, which in this framework was the ILS provided by their vendors. The evaluation was the second stage, in this stage the ILSs will be evaluated using two characteristics of cloud computing which are multi-tenant software and security certification. Access and evaluation are the independent variables because it could be changed independently. For example, the characteristics of cloud computing could be changed with the number of other functions provided by the ILSs. The dependent variable in this model, or usage are the usability of the chosen ILS. The main factor of ILS is to helping the users and the librarians in getting the best services from the library, so the ILS must complement with the library culture and technology of the library.
