INT1 Task 3

Does freezing popcorn yield more popcorn?

Project Design Plan.

This scientific experiment is to gauge the amount of kernels popped when the storage temperatures of the kernels are changed. Does freezing popcorn kernels for 24 hours yield more or less popped kernels than popcorn kernels stored at room temperature? By performing this experiment we can decide how to maximize our food potential. We will purchase six identical brands of popcorn from the local food store that have the same ingredients, weight and brand name. We will take three of the bags of popcorn kernels and store it in a standard household freezer for twenty four hours. The temperature of the freezer will remain at a constant rate of temperature. The other identical bags of popcorn kernels will be stored on a cabinet shelf and remain at a constant room temperature.

• Independent variable: Storage temperature.

• Dependent variable: Amount of kernels popped.

• Controlled variables: Temperature, cooking time.

By seeing the results of the most kernels popped we can determine which method of storage yields the most food.

Literature Review.

According to a study on which brands of popcorn yields the most popcorn by Sean Boyd (2010) “The Jolly Time popcorn had the lowest amount of un-popped kernels”. But another researcher Ben Popken (2008) Which popcorn pops the most, said, “ACTII was the winner.” Since there are many experiments with different results of the most popped kernels we will chose just one name brand at the local store and keep the brand name constant for this experiment. The name brand of popcorn is not the independent variable so we will use a random store bought popcorn for this experiment. Both of these experiments are similar to each other. They are testing the hypothesis on which brand name produces the least amount of un-popped kernels. In this current

After researching, I found two studies that are similar to my experiment. One study by Sean Boyd (2007) tested to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the least amount of un-popped kernels. Mr. Boyd tested five brands of butter flavored microwave popcorn: Aldi, Act II, Orville Redenbacher, Jolley Time and Pop-Secret. His experiment proved his hypothesis partially wrong. Mr. Boyd hypothesized that Orville Redenbacher would be the best and Aldi's would be the worst. His experiment proved that Act II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels while Aldi's did have the most un-popped kernels on average.…

I used two studies to review this experiment. The first test was done by Sean Boyd who tested three bags of five different brands. Mr Boyd however only factored the un-popped kernels into his results. He averaged the amount un-popped kernels to find that ACT II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels. ( Boyd, 2006 ) The second was done by Tammie Mason. She tested four different brands. She popped three bags for each brand and then found the average number of popped kernels per brand. She concluded that more expensive brand, Orville Redenbacker, produced the most popped kernels per bag. A mid-priced brand, Act II, popped the least. (Mason, 2011) Mr. Boyds test did not have enough data for me so I decided to base my test on Ms. Mason’s process with small modifications.…

In this project I will be testing whether or not popcorn yields a higher percentage of popped kernels when frozen. This is relevant because most people would like to get the best value out of items they purchased and this may demonstrate one way to do that. I will be freezing multiple bags of popcorn and then popping both frozen and unfrozen bags in the microwave. Finally I will count the popped and unpopped kernels to determine the percentages for both variables and if there is a difference.…

Two brand name popcorn packages are being tested. Act II and Orvill Redenbacher. Both are tested in the same microwave. The same time is being used (2.5 Minutes). Both packages were weighed before and after the popping procedure, the results were recorded. Total cooking time was measured and recorded for both popcorn packages. 10 randomly selected popped kernels from each package were measured with a ruler and results were recorded. Average size for both were calculated and recorded. All un-popped kernels were collected from each package and weighed in a dish. The weight of the dish was subtracted from the total weight to find the weight of un-popped kernels from each brand. The percentage was calculated and compared.…

Our Solar System INT1 TASK 1 The Evolution of our Solar System • Observations of the stars, sun, and planets appearing to revolve around the Earth, which seem to be at motionless, lead ancient astronomers to believe the Earth was the center of the solar system. • Claudis Ptolemy’s version of the Geocentric Model was the most widely accepted and recognized example of the Geocentric Model. • Nicolaus Copernicus published a book on his theory of a heliocentric system, the book, De revolutionibus orbium coelstium, puts the Sun at the center of the Solar System with planets revolving around it. It also pointed out that the Earth was in motion and that motion could explain the Retrograde motion of the planets.…

At the same time, the pressurized steam within the kernel expands and causes the starch to turn into fluffy popcorn. Since the experiment of popping kernels takes place in an open system, the steam from the kernel is able to escape. Therefore, the mass of the water that underwent phase change to gas is lost into the air or evaporated. This systematic error significantly affects the measured data because it causes the total mass of the popped kernels to be 18.83 % less than the total mass of the un-popped kernels. In order to obtain better results when repeating the experiment, the un-popped kernels should be placed within a closed system, such as a vacuum chamber, in which the steam from the kernels would not be able to…

The materials that were used throughout this experiment consisted of different brands of potato chips, graph paper, a rolling pin and sunlight. The first step was to find the serving size listed on the back of the bag of chips, write down the serving size on a notepad. Next find the total fat per serving for each brand of chips in the grams. Count out a number of chips equal to the serving size for that brand of chips. Next place the chips on a sheet of graph paper. Roll over the chips several times with a rolling pin. Remove the graph paper and tape the graph paper to a window.…

The Kellogg Company is the world's leading producer of cereals. Its products are manufactured in 18 countries and sold in more than 180 countries. For more than 100 years, Kellogg's has been a leader in health and nutrition through providing consumers with a wide variety of food products. These are designed to be part of a balanced diet and meet the different tastes of consumers. Kellogg's focuses on sustainable growth. This involves constantly looking for ways to meet consumer needs by growing the cereal business and expanding its product portfolio. Market research is a specific area of marketing that informs businesses like Kellogg's about the things consumers need, how best to design products to answer those needs and how to advertise those products to consumers. Market research goes beyond finding out what consumers are thinking today. It can identify what consumers might want in the future. In this way market research helps a business to make more informed choices. This reduces the risks for any new product development (NPD). It also increases the likelihood that products will be well received by consumers when they are launched. Kellogg's launched Crunchy Nut Cornflakes in the UK in 1980. Since then, it has become one of the most important brands for Kellogg's with a sales value of £68 million (according to IRI sales data). In 2003 the Crunchy Nut brand created a brand extension. This involved using the Crunchy Nut name to launch a new product called Crunchy Nut Clusters. This variant has two varieties, Milk Chocolate Curls and Honey and Nut. Both of them have enabled the brand to reach a wider group of consumers. This brand extension is now worth £21 million in annual value sales (according to IRI sales data). This case study focuses on the importance of market research during the development and launch of Crunchy Nut Bites, a more recent extension to the Crunchy Nut brand. The objective of this innovation was to provide a new flavour and texture for…
