INT - Bedroom - Night

Saturday Night Live is playing in the background. Spotlight on two young teenagers, MAYA and CASS, who are sitting comfortably on beanie bags side by side. CASS is checking her cellphone, her one foot tapping impatiently, while MAYA is wringing her hands nervously. CASS: Hey Maya, do ya think Alex would like this?

MAYA: Hard to say. We barely know her.

CASS: Well, I think she would.

[CASS checks her cellphone again.]

MAYA: Why did you invite her over?

CASS [bored tone]: I don’t know. She seems kinda lonely, I guess.

MAYA: I mean, she’s only been in school for a week now…

CASS: Ah huh.

MAYA: And already she has a bad rap.

CASS: She has a tattoo though, and like, a motorcycle.

MAYA: So?

CASS: So, it’s pretty

Thanks for invitin’ me and stuff!

[ALEX plops onto MAYA’s beanie bag beside her, knocking MAYA off.]

ALEX: Oops, sorry. So, whatcha guys watchin’?

[MAYA groans as she gets up, before squeezing next to CASS on her beanie bag.]

CASS: Saturday Night Live.

ALEX: Ugh, really? Pff, that show’s lame.

CASS [embarrassed]: I know, but, uh, Maya wanted to watch it.

ALEX: Heh. No worries, I brought my own movies.

[ALEX reaches into her backpack, before she brings out a dozen DVDs. All the movies have gory, violent looking covers.]

[MAYA looks horrified.]

MAYA [nervous]: Uh, I don’t really-

CASS: Heck yeah!

[ALEX slaps MAYA’s back. MAYA yelps.]

ALEX: Come on, Maya, watch it with us!

CASS: Yeah, come on!

MAYA [meek]: Okay…

ALEX:

ALEX: Pff, weak!

MAYA: Don’t go in there, don’t go in there, don’t-

[Another blood curdling scream is heard, MAYA curls up into a ball. ALEX is grinning.]

[After a moment, the sound effects and music cease.]

ALEX: Man, they don’t make trailers like that anymore.

MAYA: …T-Trailer…?

CASS: I got to watch that sometime.

ALEX: We can put that on next.

CASS: Sweet. c MAYA: Uh…

ALEX: Don’t sweat it, Maya. You can sit next to me, if ya want.

MAYA: Uh, no thanks.

ALEX: Don’t worry, you two are gonna love this.

[The movie starts, and MAYA leans over toward CASS.]

MAYA [harsh whispering]: Okay, there’s something seriously wrong with Alex.

CASS: What, why?

MAYA: Just look at her.

[MAYA points at Alex, who is snickering as she watches.]

CASS: Really, Maya? It’s just dialogue right now.

[A WOMAN gasps loudly in fright. ALEX starts to laugh.]

MAYA: See what I mean? Those rumours got to be true, Cass.

CASS: Hmm.

MAYA: Or worse, what if she does more than shoplift?

CASS:

The war on drugs is one of the longest, seemingly non-progressive issues the US has ever faced. The fact that the government has been prolonging the end of this war, is an issue in itself. The documentary The House I Live In, directed by Eugene Jarecki in 2012, is an informative and important film for the advancement of the war on drugs. In the film, the complete history of the war on drugs is picked apart and essentially, it is determined and expressed that the war on drugs is a counterproductive stint to maximize the wealth and the image of the government. The film is eye-opening, in that it also explains the degree of classism and racism which has provided the basic ideas behind the war on drugs.…
