Insurgent: Success Or Failure
You never want to judge a book on its cover. Read it and determine whether it is what says it is. Some books are great while others just aren’t satisfying or take a long time to build up. I will be determining whether the book, Insurgent, is an amazing book or just a failure. So far, the protagonist, Tris Prior, wakes up in the Amity compound and spends a couple days there, but is ultimately driven out by Dauntless traitors. They enter a train filled with factionless and soon find Tobias’s supposedly dead mother. The factionless and Dauntless later create a plan and try to infiltrate the Erudite headquarters to destroy Jeanine and their information. Tris realized that that particular information was crucial to the factions’ fate. She then …show more content…
The action was very immediate at the start with the Dauntless traitors finding Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Peter, and Marcus at the Amity compound. “I hear a heavy thump and a scream. There are screams everywhere, to my left, to my right. Gunshots. The Abnegation are dying again, dying like they were when I pretended to be under the simulation. And all I’m doing is running.” (Roth 84) As they are running away from the Erudite, multiple Abnegation are shot down. Bullets streak past their faces as they run. The action only picks up more once they reach the fence. They hop onto an oncoming train that is filled with factionless. A small battle ensues but only last long enough for Tobias to speak his name, which made the factionless know whom he is. So the beginning starts off rather …show more content…
It could be just the fact that my mind likes to wander quite a bit, especially during reading, but I do think the confusion could derive from the serum and simulation usage in the context of the story. “’We can’t get out of here,’ I say. ‘ because this is a simulation.’” He pulled me to my feet with my right hand. The real Tobias would have remembered the wound in my right shoulder. “’What?’ He scowled at me. ‘Don’t you think I would know if I was under a simulation?’ ‘You aren’t under a simulation. You are the simulation.’” (Roth 373) It was at this point that I was already confused on Tobias’s plan and how he managed to escape after he told Tris the plan and, honestly, how the plan would even work. In the midst of that confusion, Roth throws in some more confusion with whether or not the reality she is in at that moment is real or fake. It really sets me off and that particular section of the book had a bit off

Although during his well prepped aptitude test he got an abnegation result he instead chose Dauntless as his faction at the Choosing Ceremony in order to escape his father. I enjoyed Tobias the most because he is quite a smart and skillful character and also helps Beatris Prior, the co-main character in several ways such as helping save her life when she was discovered to be divergent. Tobias was a very brave and smart character and this was displayed in the novel when he was helping save Tris. Tris was an outstanding recruit, impressively completing all initiations at very rare pace. “You got out three times faster than any of the other initiates.…

The book that I have been hooked on ever since SSR started has been Code of Honor by Alan Gratz. Generally I am not a huge reader, but this book has grabbed my attention with its dramatic suspense and constant action. This book is written in first person, and in present day. The setting is primarily set in Phoenix, Arizona. This story is based around the main protagonist, Kamran Smith. He has everything going for him; winning the big football game and scoring five touchdowns, becoming the homecoming king, and dating one of the prettiest girls at East Phoenix High School. Literally overnight everything changes for Kamran, as word gets out that his brother, Darius Smith, has betrayed the United States army to become a terrorist. Every couple…

First of all, her bravery allowed her to face fears that came her way, and granted her a new identity as “Tris”. Moreover, Tris’ Divergent status assisted her greatly in the pursuit of her identity, and ultimately helped her realize the truth. These traits commonly appear throughout the story and reflect on Tris’ personality for who she is and what she stands for. At the end of the story, her goal is finally achieved when she accepts the fact that she is a unique individual that cannot only display one personality, akin to any other human being living in the world…

Tris’s eyes flickered to the other girl. She was beautiful in a cold kind of way. Her ice blue eyes shone from under pitch-black hair that fell to her waist. Dressed in a black leather jacket and tight black leggings, she looked like she was born to be Dauntless. The injured girl found her eyes going straight back to Tobias. She couldn’t make sense of what was going on. Her pain-addled mind couldn’t keep up with the events that were playing…

The subjects in this experiment were not aware of what Milgram is testing them for. Each participants had different reaction to leaners’ pled. If Tris was truly meant to be in Abnegation, she would have let her blood drip onto the stones instead of the coals. Choosing Abnegation would have been selfless because she is doing it for her parents, who had already lost one child, but instead, she chooses her own needs before theirs. This is why, when she lets the blood drip onto the coals, she thinks “I am selfish. I am brave” (Roth 47). This shows that Tris does belong in Dauntless and not in Abnegation, because it takes bravery to go against her family like that, and it was not a selfless act to choose another faction over her own. She proves her bravery in other ways, by jumping out of the train, and by climbing the Ferris wheel, which is a feat that even Four is afraid of. Tris has never known any life other than Abnegation, and she has never been taught about the Dauntless way of life, yet she still manages to do all these brave feats without the help or encouragement of her family or friends. When Tris hops onto the train as soon as she chooses Dauntless in the choosing ceremony, she is worried about the choice that she made. She worries that she will not fit in with the others. That is why she decides to jump first into the Dauntless headquarters. Before she jumps, she thinks “I am proud. It will get me into trouble someday, but today it makes me brave” (Roth 57). This shows that even though she was hesitating about jumping into the pit, her bravery helped her to pull through, and it helped to give her the courage to be the first one to jump. Tris has been debating what faction she should pick in the choosing ceremony, and her willingness to jump into the pit proves that she made the right decision, because only a member of Dauntless would want to jump into the pit, and a member of Abnegation would never have even made it off of the train. A member of Abnegation would never be able to survive…

Abnegation has very strict rules, and banned anything that makes one selfish. When Tris takes a test to see which faction she belongs in, her results were inconclusive. She was informed that she has a rare condition called Divergent, which means she can belong in more than one faction. The government says that it is dangerous, so they try to kill anyone who has it. Tris wants to conceal it, so even though being curious is selfish, she asks different sources for help and the information improved her understanding of it. Dauntless are known for being tough, so in initiation they are taught to fight. Tris is not strong, so she gets knocked out in the first thirty seconds of her fight. While in the hospital she is told she can not continue training, and she will have to leave. She felt discouraged because she did not risk everything just to quit now. Tris was not going to take no for an answer; so even though she was in extreme pain, she ran into the training room to continue initiation. The last occasion that Tris remains undeterred is when she goes zip lining. To take their minds of the pressure of initiation, everyone decides to go zip lining. Nobody wants Tris to go because they feel like she does not fit in with them, but she stands up for herself and reluctantly, they let her go. Tris was petrified, because if she backed out she would be made fun of; but she went down the…
