Inman's Journey To Go Back Home To Cold Mountain
The novel takes off at the time around the Civil War; Inman is critically wounded due to the fact that he is a confederate soldier during this time. After about ten years Inman finally decides to go back home to Cold Mountain. Inman wrote a letter to his dearly beloved Ada, saying that he will return soon so that they can talk about future plans with each other and also discuss the present and the past with each other, like all the hardships and trials each individually had to overcome in order to finally be with each other. Inman escapes out of the hospital where he is being treated so he can finally embark on his journey toward his love. After this accident Inman believes that war solves nothing.     The reason that scene stood out to me was because as I examine Inman’s character, I find that from the war and all the flash backs he is having it comes off as a mild case of PDSD. He is trapped within himself time to time. As his main plotline is to return to cold mountain to see his wife Ada. He runs into a lot of obstacles and more challenges that postpone him back. This scene shows us that Inman just wants everything to be okay and back to normal again. To “fly away” as in to leave all his problems. By leaving all his war problems behind he could be back home with his wife Ada living happily ever after.     “Armies of the Night” has an uncertain ending through conflicts and a plot that has a consistent human character where characteristics only fiction novels have. As read in all novels, there is a definite plot, which is introduced in the first chapter, “Pen Pals.” The first chapter gives the reader the plot of Mailer’s journey from beginning to end, giving the reader the feel of reading a fiction novel.
