Inishmaan
A Purpose for Life The Cripple of Inishmaan had great acting that helped convey many themes and ideas throughout the performance. I had never been to a play at the University of Delaware, so I did not know what to expect from this play. I was very optimistic about the play and I tried to be as open-minded as possible. The main theme of this play was that everyone has something that drives them and keeps them happy in life. Each of the characters in The Cripple of Inishmaan had a different trait about themselves that made them unique. Some of the characters had traits that seemed to be better than others, but nonetheless, all the characters had some sort of trait that defined who they are. All of the characters and their traits are what made The Cripple of Inishmaan a success. One of the best characters at showing off their traits was Johnnypateenmike. Johnnypateenmike’s trait is that he is very nosy and curious of everything that was going on, on the island of Inishmaan. He always wants the inside scoop so that he could be the first to tell the whole town of his news. Much of the time, he did not care how important the news was, but he cared that it was news and he wanted to share it with everyone. For example, he saw in the newspaper that there was a sheep with no ears and then he told the whole island about this sheep, even though no one really cared. Another example of Johnnypateenmike’s curiosity is when Johnnypateenmike is eavesdropping on Babbybobby and Billy Claven’s conversation about Billy’s letter. Johnnypateenmike eavesdropped and then wanted to know what the letter was about. So, Johnnypateenmike continued to ask Babbybobby what it said. Johnnypateenmike never found out what the letter said but it took until he was hit in the head with a rock for him to stop asking about that letter. Even then, Johnnypateenmike asked Doctor McSharry what the letter said. It just shows that Johnnypateenmmike loves his own curiosity. His nosiness and
