Specific Purpose: To inform my audience the three major uses of Turmeric.
Central Idea: Three major uses of turmeric are anti-oxidant, colorant, and anti-septic.
Introduction:
I. Has anyone heard of any spices that are used as an anti-oxidant, colorant, and an anti-septic? Perhaps you are the person who likes to visit doctor in case of small injuries or likes to spend money to buy an antiseptic cream. What if by knowing the name and its uses could save you hundreds of money?
II. I am talking about turmeric .Turmeric is a spice grown in India and other tropical regions of Asia. It has a long history of use in herbal remedies, particularly in China, India, and Indonesia. The root and rootstock, or rhizome, of the plant contains the active ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin is not related to cumin, which is a spice made from the seeds of a different plant. It has three major uses and it can save us hundreds of money and it helps us to stay healthy.
III. As I am from Asia, it’s not a new topic for me because I use turmeric daily in my diet.
IV. I want to share you the three major uses of turmeric that is; it can be used as an anti-oxidant, a colorant, and an anti-septic.
(Transition: Let’s begin with our first use that is; turmeric can be used as an anti-oxidant.)
Body:
I. Animal and laboratory studies have found that curcumin, an antioxidant that is an active ingredient in turmeric, demonstrated some anticancer effects.
A. However, clinical research is needed to determine curcumin's role in cancer prevention and treatment in humans.
B. Several types of cancer cells are inhibited by curcumin in the laboratory, and curcumin slows the spread of some cancers in some animal studies.
C. Curcumin is being studied to find out whether it helps other diseases such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and stomach ulcers.
D. It is also being studied to see whether it can help lower “bad cholesterol” and improve outcome in kidney transplants.
