Learning a second language is when a person acquires a language that is not native to them. Many people believe that learning a second language should be required for children and believe that it is beneficial. However, many also believe that it is not necessary and additionally, may be malign to students and leave negative long-term effects. People who are for the requirement of learning a foreign language have their reasons to support that opinion. One major reason people consider it important is that it will help the learners acquire jobs in the future. Before acquiring those jobs, it will help them get accepted into universities as well as receive scholarships. Another important factor is that it will improve the United States’ foreign relations and foreign economic affairs (Marcos 1). They are also inclined to believe that being bilingual will help them comprehend even english words more easily, due to the similar Latin roots. Those who are against the requirement of foreign languages also have reasons as to why they do not think it is necessary. Some say that it is impossible for us to reach the goal of many students becoming fluent in foreign languages therefore it is not critical to strive for it (Haven 1). Others say that since English is now spoken almost everywhere and is a universal language, it is unnecessary for American students to spend their time learning another language. Many parents fear that increasing the skills in one language reduces the skills in the other and would also confuse the children, causing them mix up words from the different languages, as well as hinder their learning (Hickson 2). Americans also believe that with the downfall in the economy and with educational budget cuts, language courses are of least importance and should be the first to go.
