Influence of Online Gaming
“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” – T.E. Lawrence. There are few things that dreams and online gaming have in common. One is their effect on people. Some people might think that it was just for fun, but some might act what they can do in online gaming. This essay was written to show the different effects of online gaming but first, let us define what is online gaming. Online gaming is played through different connections but there is something more than that. It might be a game played over some form of computer network but it extends to that because it is like a 3-in-1 coffee, a friend-maker and an addictive drug.
Online gaming needs some sort of a connection for you to be able to play with the use of computers. There are three types of games that you can play that relies on the type of connection you have. These are the Local Area Connection (LAN) Games, Internet Games and Web/Browser games. LAN games, such as Call of Duty and DOTA, are popularized where multiple players battle against each other. These games allows players to join together locally in multiplayer games through a small computer network rather than through the internet. Secondly, internet games allow a wide-range network with the use of internet connection. Usually, these games have the multiplayer capability that could connect players from different parts of the globe. Lastly, web/browser games can be played by a single player or by multiplayer. These games also need internet connection. The graphics of these web-based technologies were developed with the help of the Flash or Java games that made the gameplay more complex. Therefore, the type of game depends on the connection that your computer have.

Video games seem to be an essential part around my friends’ circle. Unfortunately, I have never been one of them, but since my brother is a huge fan of video games, I can say I grew up around a video games’ world. As I remember, my brother played video games in every minute and second. I believe you must wonder why I could insist not to play. The truth is I was too afraid to be addicted to those games. I knew I was like my brother. I have seen all the consequences being addicted to video games bring. So I never played the same games several times and this is how I controlled myself. Hence it is much easier for me to observe how people interact with video games and it can also satisfy my curiosity about why people are so addictive. Therefore, I asked two of my girlfriends and my brother to help me to conduct this research. I ask them to play Halo 4, which is a new game they have never played.…

In “Dream Machines”, Will Wright suggests that human have amazing imagination that invented games. Although games have a bad image as “violent, addictive, childish, worthless” among public, Wright, as a gamer, finds some positive impacts of games that are hardly discovered by normal people. He insists games can enhance gamers’ problem-solving skills because they tend not to read the manual to get the direction once they get the game; instead they take repetition of trial and error to create ways to deal with the game. Other than that, Wright claimed gaming is not just exploring the virtual fancy world. It can actually foster people’s creativity as gamers are asked to involve in creating worlds, characters and story lines of the game. Letting them help in creating and designing the game, this can also connect gamers to new communities.…

Children and adults alike flock by the thousands to pick up and take home the latest video games. These days there are hundreds of video game titles to choose from on many different platforms so one is sure to find one that suits them. This trend has spawned an enormous economic force both in the United States and worldwide. According to 1up.com, video game sales were actually down in 2004 to $9.9 billion from $10 billion in 2003 in the United States alone (Lee). Perhaps more importantly is that this has produced a cultural trend as well. As more and more children define their lives through video games more and more children are becoming adults who also define their lives through video games. This is a growing problem in this country that entertainment is starting to take over the lives of more and more people. This is not necessarily to the fault of any single factor but a combination of many. The increasing complexity and realism of games has much to do with it. EverQuest is such a stimulating simulation in that many people prefer the ‘EverQuest World ' to the real one. Also to blame are the parents who choose to allow this ‘electronic babysitter ' into their homes more and more often. Perhaps the most to blame is the interactive environment some games create. That is, games of the MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) class. The most notorious and arguably the best game of this genre is EverQuest. It has single-handedly brought to national attention the effects of video game addiction (VGA). Cultural values deemed essential to a fulfilled life are cast aside in lieu of a virtual reality and steps need to be taken to recover those affected or prevent it altogether. Common, important, and exciting portions of life like having a job, a family, friends and a love life come second to video games. Once the condition of VGA is identified, the support of friends, family or support groups are crucial in reversing it.…
