ABSTRACT
Aluminium and their alloys are widely used as construction materials from house hold appliances to air-craft parts. The commercially pure aluminium has merely low corrosion resistance and hardness compare to aluminium alloy. In this study an attempt has been made to study the influence of heat treatment on the properties of commercially pure aluminium. The investigation was consisted of identification of commercial aluminium through colour identification in chemical test and its subsequent heat treatment. The experimental parameters were heating temperature, cooling rate and quenching medium. The prepared specimen were heated at 300, 500 and 600 °C and then subsequently cooled either in open air, slowly in the furnace or quenched in furnace oil. Hardness of the heat treated and without heat treated specimen was measured in the Rockwell Scale. Corrosion resistance of the sample was evaluated in 3.5 % sodium chloride solution by weight loss method. It was found that specimen heat-treated at 500 °C showed higher hardness and corrosion resistance compare to that heat-treated at 300°C and 600 °C. Oil quenching specimen provided maximum hardness and corrosion resistance compare to slow furnace cooling and air cooling. So, it is said that hardness and corrosion resistance of commercially pure aluminium (99 % pure) could be improved through heat treatment at 500 °C and subsequent quenching in oil.

Aluminum is a tin-white metal which melts at 640°C and boils at 2,327-2,450°C (N/A, 2012). It is very light and has a density of 2.68g. It is both ductile and malleable, making it stiff and strong, and with frequent annealing it can be rolled into thin foil (N/A, 1996-2012). It is a good conductor of heat and electricity, and it is a solid in its standard state. One of Aluminums chemical properties is that in moist air, it combines slowly with oxygen to form aluminum oxide. The aluminum oxide forms a very thin, whitish coating on the aluminum metal (N/A, n.d.). This element is also a fairly active metal. It reacts with many hot acids and with alkalis. Aluminum also reacts quickly with hot water, and in powdered form, it catches fire quickly when exposed to a flame (N/A, 1996-2012).…

Comparing a material's initial treatment and the microstructures that are formed from different processes, an engineer can accurately understand why certain treated materials of the same family can be stronger than another. In this experiment annealed and cold-worked specimens of AISI 1018 STEEL are used, along with a Hardness tester, a grinding and polishing process, and a micrograph to see the grain structure of the steel. After putting a specimen through a process using each piece of equipment, grain structures of differently treated materials can be compared. The Hardness Tester gives a value of the strength of a material and in this case the annealed steel was 48.6 HRB, untreated steel is usually around 73 HRB, and the cold rolled steel was 90.8 HRB, in the Rockwell scale. These strength values can then be used comparatively with each of the steel's microstructures. The grinding and polishing processes, along with a solution used to etch the surface of the steel, is then used to prepare the material for the micrograph. The steel was first prepared with four types of increasingly fine sandpaper and then polished with four types of increasingly fine polycrystalline diamond suspension fluid and paper. A 2% Nital solution is then used to etch the surface, or to make the grains of the steel more prominent. After this, a micrograph is used to see the grain structures of the differently treated steel and compare the different proportions of ferrite, pearlite, and others such as cementite. The grain structures for each steel varied on these proportions. The annealed steel was made up of 77% ferrite, which is innately soft and roughly 20% pearlite which is much harder. From simply visual interpretations, the cold rolled steel possessed a far higher content of pearlite, despite initial predications that the samples would contain similar…

Abstract “Age or Precipitation Hardening” effects on the 2024 Aluminum sample (Al-4%Cu) was investigated by conducting two sets of experiments on 5 samples. In the first experiment, 4 of the samples were artificially aged, and in the second experiment, only one of the 5 samples were naturally aged. In conclusion, it is concluded that the hardness of the samples is directly affected by the time and the temperature of the age hardening, so as the samples are age hardened longer and in a higher temperature, the hardness of them increases accordingly. Description of theory Age or Precipitation hardening is a widely used heat treatment method that is done to raise the strength (including the yield and ultimate tensile strength) of malleable materials such as Aluminum. In precipitation hardening, the formation of a very fine and uniformly distributed second phase particles in the initial phase causes the yield strength of material to increase. These second fine phase in the structure of the materials plays a very important role in the motion of dislocations by impeding their movement with making a defect in the crystal lattice, which both causes the higher yield strength into the material. Heat Treatment of Mild Steel

In this experiment, we observed how the properties of plain carbon steel vary with the heat treatment condition. We prepared six different samples in three different heat treatment configurations and performed hardness tests on them by using the Rockwell tester and observed the microscopic using optical microscope. Based on the optical microscope observation, we found that the crack is appeared at the tempering stage, because the grain size is larger compared at the austenitizing stage at higher tempering temperature. Larger grain will cause the less phase boundary area, lower strength and higher ductility which give the reasons for a crack to appear. Conventional heat treatment procedures for producing martensitic steels generally involve continuous and rapid cooling of an austenitized specimen in water and room temperature for tempered specimen. The properties of a steel that has been quenched and then tempered depends largely on the rate of cooling and tempering times and temperatures. During the quenching heat treatment, the specimen can be converted to a variety of microstructures including soft and ductile spheroidite to hard and brittle martensite. The production of pearlitic and bainitic steels is lower in cost and suffices for most applications. Martensitic steels must be tempered prior to use due to their extreme brittleness. Pearlite, Bainite and Martensite will all be produced through variations in the cooling rates of initially austenized samples. The second experiment involved in the study of the heat treatment examines is hardness test by using Rockwell tester. Overall, heat treatment has a tremendous impact on some of the properties of materials used by engineers, and the effects of heat treatment should always be considered.…

The present work investigates the mechanical properties and tribological behavior of Al-B4C composites. Attempts were made to overcome the wetting problem between B4C and liquid aluminium at lower temperatures for promising the mechanical and tribological behaviour of the Al -B4C composites. AA6061-B4C particle reinforced composites were produced through casting route at 850ºC with K2TiF6 added as flux to overcome the wetting problem between B4C and liquid aluminium metal. The Aluminium B4C composite samples were subsequently subjected to T6 heat treatment. The composite samples thus produced were then characterized by hardness, compression and wear test. The results showed that the hardness of the composites increased with increasing B4C particle…
