Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier-General Ismaila Maharazu Tsiga The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has

reiterated his commitment in using members of the National Youth Service Corps as ad hoc

staff for the forthcoming voter registration exercise and the 2011 elections.

Prof. Jega said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Director - General of NYSC,

Brigadier General Maharazu Ismaila Tsiga, on Thursday at the NYSC headquarters, Abuja.

According to Jega, there is no doubt that NYSC has the human capacity and resolve to assist

INEC in producing a credible voter register and conducting a free and fair 2011 elections.

He said, ”We want to open a new chapter in terms of how best NYSC can help INEC to give

Nigerians a credible voter register and free and fair election. I want to use this

opportunity to inform the NYSC D-G of our desire to recruit all our ad hoc staff for the

purpose of the voter registration exercise as well as the 2011 elections from the NYSC

members.”

Prof. Jega explained that INEC needs at least three ad hoc staff at each polling unit and

INEC needs about 360, 000 of them for the electoral processes.

The INEC boss said that the commission recognised the shortcomings of the past with respect

to how corps members were treated and promised that such shoddy treatment will be reduced to

its barest minimum or even eliminated.

He said,”We will do that it takes to ensure the comfort of corps members as they participate

in the voter registration exercise and the elections. We will work with the D-G and his

staff to work out the modalities and we will do whatever it takes to make the corps members

While I respect that the military is deemed a “special society” by the courts, and as such, certain rights granted to the average civilian apply differently, I feel that the freedom of religion is a fundamental American right. The military is not legally required to make religious accommodations, but as a commander, I feel that interference with an individual’s religious practice should be met with strict scrutiny. I feel that commander should more often than not grant requests for religious accommodations. Mission-accomplishment is the foundation of the military. A counterargument to making religious accommodations for military members may be that it would inhibit mission-accomplishment; therefore, undermining the nature of…
