Industrialization Document­Based Questions
There were a lot of positive and negative effects on the people of England during the late
1700s. The Industrial Revolution made living easier for many people across North America and
Europe in the 1800s. Although some may have benefited from this new lifestyle, many workers suffered from overcrowded and filthy cities and were forced to work countless hours in cramped factories. While some might argue that the Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the expansive economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization's negative effects were separated family life, exploitation, and environmental damage.
In the era before the Industrial Revolution, families focused more on agricultural production and left most of the work to the men. There is a lot of evidence that would lead us to believe that pre­industrial life was much easier and less stressful for families. During that time they worked together as a family in which they all worked towards a common goal, allowing them to spend time with each other. The Industrial Revolution separated families and sent each of them to work different jobs, even some children. Document #2 shows the impact on parents and their bond with their children. The poem “My Boy”, written by a parent during the period of industrialization, emphasized the lack of time a parent had with their child:

A stranger am I to my child;
And he one to me.
One can tell from reading the excerpt that the author of the poem longed to spend time with their son, but was being kept away by work. When the author returns home, it is almost as if they are complete strangers. Long hours kept many families separate and this had an effect on the children as well. When parents
