ABSTRACT
This report entails the industrial work experience scheme carried out by me for the purpose of obtaining a bachelor’s of science degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The primary objective of the scheme is detailed comprehension of the theoretical approach to learning in the university and the practical understanding of what is obtained in the industry. The industry here in particular is the food and beverage industry of which sugar is the primary focus. Sugar, which is widely used by humans, is manufactured by plants during the process of photosynthesis and is found in many animal tissues. Various classes of sugar such as monosaccharide, disaccharides, trisaccharides and polysaccharides are abundant in nature. Amongst the commercially important sugars are glucose, lactose, maltose and most importantly sucrose from which we obtain sugarcane. Worthy of note is the fact that of all sugars, only sucrose can be crystallized. At Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, where I performed my industrial experience, the various department where I worked during the industrial experience includes: Chemical Department, which controls

We have four important macromolecules; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. From these four, the macromolecule I chose for this assignment was carbohydrate. Carbohydrates branch off into three main categories; monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. I decided to focus on disaccharides, specifically sucrose. Sucrose is more commonly known as table sugar. It has a chemical formula of C12H22O11. It is physically described as a white, odorless (although when heated, it may have a caramel-like odor) solid with a crystalline/powdery texture. In addition, sucrose also has many compelling chemical properties. Sucrose is a polar molecule, which can be identified by observing its asymmetrical shape. In addition, this substance…

The percent yield of ethanol from sucrose was successfully high, at 93.3 %. The final mass of the distillate obtained after fermentation and the fractional distillation process was 0.81g. The distillate was collected when the temperature reached approximately 50-70°C. The amount of ethanol that should have been produced was 13.66 ml, had the entire distillate (over 100 ml) been distilled fractionally . The density of the distillate obtained was 0.81 g/mL; therefore, the percent ethanol by weight was approximately 90%. The distillate contained mostly ethanol, but also contained water because due to the azeotropic mixture water and ethanol mix to produce, consisting of 95% ethanol and 5% water by weight. This experiment was a success due to the high percent yield of ethanol from the fermentation of sugar.…

The rate for this test was 0.024826 kpa. The experimental groups showed a decreasing trend in the fermentation rates as the concentration of sucrose increased. The rate for the 10% solution was 0.027066 kpa… 15% solution was 0.02147 kpa… and the 20% solution was 0.01636 kpa. The data in Figure 1 shows a decreasing fermentation rate as the concentration increased. However, this data does not support external conclusions. The enzyme present in the yeast was at optimal temperature to metabolize the sucrose. After research, it was concluded that sucrose is a food source capable of being metabolized by yeast. As substrate concentration increases, the rate of reaction also increases in the beginning, but eventually reaches a constant rate of reaction at a maximum point. Therefore, the expected results were for the rate of fermentation to increase as the concentration increased. However, the data did not support…

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is one of the Federal Government policies established under decree No 47 of 1971 of industrial training fund. It’s also a skill-acquisition programme designed for the tertiary institutions as a complementary programme to the theoretical education and laboratory and workshop practices engaged in by students in tertiary institutions which, by industrial standards, are inadequate or insufficient to serve the practical needs of the industries. The exercise is for a period of six months.…
