INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (IDP) – TERM AND DATE: 5 Feb - Apr | |

Name: Steve Dowler Individual Development Plan for Module Code:

Your IDP is for you to devise your own SMART(ER) objectives, with short, mid and long term goals, using feedback from observers, mentors, peers, tutors, and your self-evaluations. These objectives can also be linked to the course requirements as relevant. This might mean that you note which of your objectives are related to course elements such as the module criteria and Assessed Learning Outcomes, Minimum Core elements and Professional Standards.

SMART(ER) objectives are generally defined as:

Specific They say clearly and exactly what you mean, exactly what you want to achieve.

Measurable They can be measured and used to evidence that you’ve reached your goal – indicate how you will know this.

Achievable/Attainable They are something you can reach within the duration of the target (e.g. over 4 weeks, a term)

Realistic/Relevant Is something you can take action on and which is appropriate

Time-related/bound Set a deadline: be realistic, clear and reflective.

Evaluated Reflect and appraise what is of value, ready to review and revise your IDP as needed

Recorded Keep track of what, where, when, how, who and why!

Nursing is much more than a job; it is a lifetime career path. One does not step lightly into the field of nursing just to further their financial gains. As quoted by Florence Nightingale, “Nursing is an art… it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit?” Developing the art of nursing requires commitment and planning. A professional development plan for a nurse is essential to guide the nurse successfully throughout his/her career.…

I did not understand the value and the importance of education until I migrated to America. Coming to America, not only did I get culture shock, but I realized that I could not survive in this country without education. However, to raise my children, I would not rely on the government. I had to start from the beginning by learning ABCs, words, and grammar. This was very difficult to do because I already had my Master’s in Mathematics from my native country. I received my Associate of Science in Mathematics in June 2002 at Los Angeles City College. I continued my education and received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in June 2006 at Cal State University. It took me years and years finally get to where I am today. I made countless sacrifices, but it has been one of the most gratifying and important decisions I had made in my whole life. Now I am pursuing my education to get DBA at Walden University.…

How you intend to develop yourself as an Adult Educator in view of the emerging WSQ issues and CET environment (e.g. older workforce, focus on training of PMETs):  Write 3 SMART learning goals as part of your development plan.  Explain why your learning goals are important. I intend to undertake a formal training program, such as this program DACE that I am going through now (and a few others), to equip myself to be a more effective or wholesome trainer. One that can allow me to develop myself in the area of training/facilitating and courseware development. I have an interest in using digital teaching technology to reach out to my audience and applying technology to reach out to a wider set of learners via elearning and mlearning. I understand that all trainers are works-in-progress and needs to continue to develop oneself by embracing continuous learning and staying current with not just the domain knowledge (i.e. the domain space in which the trainer is an expert in) but also in instructional methods and appreciating/engaging with the uniqueness of adult learners. On this note, I would like to share my 3 goals that I have which would allow me to develop myself. My three smart goals to allow me to develop the goals I have briefly outlined above are. Goal #1 My development goal is to embrace continuous learning to remain current with domain knowledge, instructional methods and appreciating the uniqueness of adult learners. Attending personal developmental seminars touching on enhancement of domain knowledge, on instructional methods and appreciating adult learners’ characteristics. At most 2 attendances at training seminars or training courses.
