Independent Research Project Proposal
Rationale
There are many levels of carbohydrates in different kinds of milk. The carbohydrate levels in milk can determine which milk is the healthiest. Milk contains carbs and the amount of carbs can affect a diet.
RESEARCH QUESTION(S), HYPOTHESIS(ES), ENGINEERING GOAL(S), EXPECTED OUTCOMES: How is this based on the rationale described above?
What is the problem or purpose to be addressed?
Can the difference of milk and carbohydrate levels determine which type of milk is healthier?
What is the independent variable (the factor being manipulated)?
The different milks are the independent variable.
What is the dependent variable? (what will be measured)
The amount of sugar from each type of milk.
Hypothesis:

Use a graduated cylinder for the measurements of milk of about 100 mL. Pour all of the liquids into their corresponding labeled beakers. Put all 3 beakers on a hot plate and let them excel to 55 degrees celsius, check with a thermometer.
Take drops of acetic acid, and stir, into each beaker until their is no color.
Remove the protein from each beaker and add 4 grams of calcium carbonate to the clear liquid in all the beakers and stir.
Now boil the liquid in the beakers. Stir the liquid and transfer into the flasks with the corresponding name. Heat until 25 mL is left.
Add 100 mL of ethanol to the 25 mL solution, and let it cool down. Heat the liquids in the flasks then let them cool slowly.
Lactose crystals will form in each flask. Take the crystals and measure their weights.
Risk and Safety: Be careful with hot plate.
Data Analysis: A t-test and or ANOVA test will be used to analyze the data.
