Malaysia Independence Day Supplement: History of independence — 52 years ago
Arab News
The struggle to search for independence began in 1511 and took more than 446 years. It ended with the declaration of national independence on Aug. 31, 1957.
The termination of the Malayan Union in 1948 made the British to commit themselves to prepare the way for the federation’s independence. Under the twin pressure of the emergency and the development of a strong Malay nationalist movement, that is UMNO, the British introduced elections in 1951 at the local level.
The problem of obtaining political cooperation among the main ethnic groups in the country to fight for independence was resolved by the successful establishment of an alliance between UMNO and the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA), the two principal communal parties and later joined by the Malayan Indian Congress (MIC).
When the first federal elections were held in 1955, the UMNO-MCA-MIC Alliance, which was headed by Tunku Abdul Rahman, won an overwhelming victory, that is 51 out of the 52 seats contested. YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman was appointed the Federation of Malaya’s first Chief Minister. The alliance was successful in pressuring the British to relinquish their sovereignty and the Federation of Malaya achieved its independence on Aug. 31, 1957.
On that day, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj poignantly read out the Proclamation of Independence. The proclamation acknowledges all Malay states including Malacca and Pulau Pinang shall forever remain a sovereign, democratic and independent state founded upon the principle of democracy.
Transcript of YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman’s speech as follows:
Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Highnesses, Your Excellencies, People of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
I am indeed proud that on this, the greatest day in Malaya’s history it falls to my lot to proclaim the formal

Throughout its history, the Malay Peninsula has been occupied by many countries with different religions, cultures and constitutional traditions. These include Portugal (1511-1641), Holland (1641-1826), Britain (1824-1948) and later Japan, (1941-1945).These occupations in turn also impacted its political and constitutional development over the years. However, its first true constitutional charter was not written until 1957 when the British - who had regained the territory in 1948 following Japanese expulsion at the end of World War II - agreed with the Malay States to create the Federation of Malaya. An independent Multinational Commission, set up during the London Constitutional Conference of 1956, drafted the document, which took effect on 31 August 1957. Except for a brief period in 1969 when race riots resulted in its suspension, this constitution- though amended several times – remains the fundamental framework of the country to date.…

After the war, the British were no longer seen as capable leaders of Singapore, as they had failed to protect her from the Japanese. The British granted Singapore self-government in 1959, and the PAP won during the general elections, making Lee Kuan Yew the first Prime Minister. Singapore and Malaya merged with Sabah and Sarawak to make the Federation of Malaysia. However, Singapore separated from Malaysia because of the racial and religious tensions between both countries. Lee Kuan Yew feared that there would not be enough resources for Singapore to survive.…

Due to her fame, Kedah was subjugated by Srivijaya in the 7th century. Until the 15th century, Kedah came under the influence and rule of the Siamese kingdom. A treaty allowed Kedah to be independent for a while until an attack by Acheh in 1618 lead to Kedah seeking protection from Siam, once again coming under the influence and ruling of the Siamese Kingdom. Kedah’s position was further jeopardised with the pressure from the Bugis, Siamese and the Burmese in the 18th century. There were many power struggles during that period until the early 20th century; the British conquered most of the Malay Peninsula. Finally in 31 August 1957, Malaya achieved independence. With such rich historical background, Kedah has developed into a state where not only her culture is invested in the people but also in the houses.…
