Indentured Servitude
An indenture was a legal contract between a servant and master enforced by the courts. Men would sign these indentures to come to the new world and work for a master for up to seven years, to pay for their journey over, and then were set free. Also, if they paid a sum of money within a certain timeframe from his or her arrival, they would be set free. Servants were shipped over by the boatload and then advertised for sale when they arrived. They were barely given enough food to survive the trip over, and many died before they even got to the new world. A buyer would sign the indenture and agree to provide all of their necessities until they were set free. The system proved to be much less desirable than first advertised though as many masters exploited their power. In the late 1500s, an economic depression hit England, and thousands of farmers went out on the streets. They wandered the streets unemployed and mostly became beggars. England saw this as a “surplus population” and needed to rid them from their land. Queen Elizabeth passed laws that could punish them, imprison them in workhouses without pay, or simply exile them. Anybody who was found begging could be whipped, sent to a workhouse, sent out of the city, or be sent out of the country entirely. This created a need for the now homeless and jobless farmers to escape their terrible living conditions. Indentured servitude began as a fairly successful way of gathering much needed help to come to the new world. One planter could not get wealthy, regardless of his work efforts, unless he had others to work his fields. This fact necessitated the need for an inexpensive source of labor. Many of the unemployed, homeless, poor and exiled men and women were offered a way to get a fresh start this way. These outcasts became commodities for wealthy merchants looking for cheap labor to bring to the new world. They were offered a trip to North America, along with four to seven years of unpaid work for

In the early 1600s, companies that were given charters by the British crown established colonies in North America. These colonies served to provide the mother country with raw materials. Previously, the only people who could afford come to America were wealthy people. With the idea of indentured servitude developed by joint-stock companies, anyone willing to work for a certain number of years could come to the New World. This system worked for numerous years, however, according to a graph of servants and slaves per probate inventory in York County, Virginia, from the years 1665 to 1695, the number of indentured servants decreased immensely while, from 1680 to 1895, the number of slaves increased. (Doc 1) The graph serves to show the progression…

a way of attracting people to the New World, Virginia offered men freedom if they would work as indentured servants for seven years, after which they would be able to purchase land and start a family. While both colonies established systems of self government, these styles of leadership and ruling were quite different. This shows that although the colonists mostly all migrated from the same region of Europe, they each settled in their colonies where the foundation of living shared similar ideas but different in the specific ways they were…

Indentured servitude and slavery existed in the ‘New World’ primarily for economic and population growth. In the book, Going to the Source, Slavery was defined as “hereditary” and “a lifetime status” and the slave must serve for life, however, on the other hand indentured servitude was “contractual” and “voluntary” although the servant is forced to serve for a fixed amount of years. Indentured servitude and slavery are strikingly parallel to each other from the fact that both parties participate in physically demanding labor and endure severe punishments induced by their master, nevertheless, the contractual agreement to each party is quite different, plus the primary skin color of the of party heavily impacts the treatment and escape punishments…

The indentured servants mostly came from Great Britain. Looking for new space, life, and opportunity. The catch was the fact that these people had no money to pay their way into the New found land. So, that turned into people looking for a way to get over here. So people thought and talked about working off a debt, if someone were to pay their way over here. I personally think that this was a trick for the most part, but I don’t have any factual information to support that claim. Then, it came a time where people stopped coming to work and the farms grew rapidly. With this going on the agricultural…

Indentured servants and the slavery system played a massive part in the rise of colonial economy during the 17th century. The colonists needed desperate help with labor because there was work that had to be done in lands. This need was satisfied with indentured servants and African slaves. The difference between these two was that they were treated differently. Indentured servants were white English people who need jobs; they were under a contract for several years in return for their transportation, food, home, and other necessities. They were used because slaves were too expansive and Indians died very quickly. After a certain event, master turned to slaves. Both helped the colonial economy burst. They put the American colonists in a better economic situation.…

According to "Indentured servant” (n.d.), an indentured servant is “a person who came to America and was placed under contract to work for another over a period of time.” This meant that the servant chose to become a slave in the respect that they worked for no pay. These were people who wanted a new life in the New World and were willing to sign a contract to work for no money and earn their freedom and perhaps more. Their trip across the Atlantic was paid for by their “master” and they were given room and board during their contract (ushistory.org, 2013).…

In the 1600s black and white people related to each other by the first African indentured servants arrived in the Virginia Colony of the United States of America in 1619. They were indentured servants and not slaves because the Spanish had baptized them and the English believed that baptized people could not be enslaved. This era was truly the beginning of white opinions dominating Black lives across continents. However, blacks and white worked side by side, married each other freely, ran away from their masters together and even rose up against the rich together, guns were drawn. Blacks had the same rights as whites of the same social status. From 1640 to 1723 the American colonies, particularly in the South, passed laws that ate away…

The southern colonies in North America, cruel punishment were commonly happen on white indentured servants. Every colony in Virginia has pillars for use to whip the slaves. One guy had tied to a pillar 4 consecutive days; his ear was nailed to a pillar. His "crime” was to philandering with a maid. Southern plantation owners treated their white indentured servants even more cruel than the black slaves, because they feel that their “black property” will always be slaves, but white indentured servants will one day be free. As indentured servants after the expiry of the contract, generally they can get a small piece of land, an independent small farmer, but the previous owner must pay a "ceded rent." “With Freedom dues, the former servant could make his way in the colonies as a hired laborer or even as a landowner. No stigma attached to his past…

After the Emancipation in the Caribbean in 1824, the British brought Indians to the Caribbean through indenture ship. They were given a five year contract as an indentured laborer, with the condition of returning home (India) with a free passage. Many were not given this opportunity for various reasons. Indian immigration in British Guiana came to a halt but reopened in 1845. While working on the plantations, indentured laborers were subject to many labor laws that were forced upon them by planters. These laws controlled there every movement; and although they were brought over to a foreign land to work for wages, they were still incompetent and had to depend on the plantations to survive.…
