Lovenheim’s article, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” is about the importance of Americans getting to know their neighbor’s because it builds social interactions, it builds trust with ones neighbors, and it builds a closer community. Lovenheim whole start to his adventure is a murder that takes place in his neighborhood of a husband killing his wife and then himself. This causes Lovenheim to realize that he doesn’t really know his fellow neighbors at all. This causes Lovenheim to go around as ask his neighbors to stay the night with them and write about their lives. The first neighbor Lovenheim stays with is 81 year old Lou, who had lost his wife. Lovenheim, Lou, and other neighbors come together as a community to help a woman in their neighborhood,…
If Linda and Larry have already asked Dale and Donna about limiting the noise personally then they should tell the apartment manager. In alerting management they can ask what course of action will be taken along with an estimated time frame. If nothing has changed then Linda and Larry can use the last resort in calling the police. Linda and Larry (if they are dealing with immature individuals) should probably expect some type of retaliation from these noisy neighbors. During this entire process I would recommend Larry and Linda keeping a written record of times, dates, and a short description of when they made contacts with the neighbors, apartment complex and even the police. If something like retaliation was to occur, they could hopefully present a good case as to why Dale and Donna would retaliate.…
Though not all neighbors have a lot of influence on their neighbor kids, the kids still see those neighbors and their habits. Children generally figure if adults do it, it must be right, so if they see that their neighbors have racist views, the children probably will too. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the Finch’s, Scout, Atticus, and Jem, have neighbors such as the Ewelles who are extreme racists. They do affect Scout and Jem, but not in a way that makes them racist, they make them see that racism is a hard and bad way to life and that it is a lot easier to get on in life without…

In the short story of Neighbors, a couple, The Stones, that lives in an apartment goes out of town for a little while as they usually do while the neighbors feed their kitty and water their plants. Though that was the job in which was supposed to be done, that is not all they did when they got over there. When entering the apartment, they found other things that interested them and snooped around. Although you may think you can trust someone to be in your living area that may always be the case.…
Mrs. Fullerton’s who has an old lifestyle is not acceptable to the new neighbor who has new modern houses. Her neighbors wanted her house to be separated from the new community or demolished her house because it’s old, stinky and it doesn’t look good for the community. She never wanted to leave the place because all the memories she had is in that place and she grows up in there. She knows that for the rest of her life she wanted to be buried in the place where her house is. Mrs. Fullerton is an old woman who is also stubborn and has lots of boundaries in life. She never cares for her community because she knows that the community wanting her to move to another place. New neighbor cares on how should the community should look like, they want to see the place modern and new, they don’t want to see an old farm house. That’s why Mrs. Fullertons is affected so much by this complains and hates about her place.…
From the outside, one would think that these vendors make the neighborhood a little sketchy, when in reality they actually enrich the community providing order and peace of mind to many regulars in the neighborhood. These people worry where to go to the bathroom, where to find their next meal, and have to deal with many worries and hardships. There are hierarchies, similar to class, within these diverse vendor communities where some are more respected than others depending on the work they do. These people are often public characters that “…take responsibility, not because they’re paid to, but because they have a talent for it…they may not have any ambition to be a public character, but it comes…
What is Community? What kind of impact can it have? These are questions that aren’t as easy to answer in today’s world, opposed to just a decade ago. The biggest change in that time, is the introduction of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. Many of the brightest minds are taking conflicting sides on the topic. Some will argue that we are more disconnected then we’ve ever been as a result of social media. On the other hand, people will swear that we have never been closer due to social media. Let me tell you, I know first-hand how much of a positive impact social media is having in our friendships and communities.…
Therefore, we moved to Brentwood, located in Long Island, in 2004. At the time, Brentwood’s population was predominately white; most of the families that lived on my block were upper-middle class white families. Even though I was only eight years old at the time of the move in, it seemed apparent that our move-in was unwanted. I recall hearing the sound of children playing outside in our neighbor’s yard and running outside to attempt to play with them. Unfortunately, the adults seemed to snatch the children up and ran inside as though there was a catastrophe outside. I also recall sitting in our living room and hearing my mother tell my step father, “Those people next door always slam the door closed whenever they see me coming outside.” Even though I was very young and may not have been able to fully comprehend the reason for our neighbors’ doings, it became clear to me that they strongly disliked my family and…

A little over a year ago, our home was burglarized by two teenagers. My children and I had opportunity to witness and be part of civility in action. Our home backed up to Eagle Rd and a gentleman in a car passing by noticed the teens jumping our back fence with our belongings. This stranger immediately fulfilled his civic "duty" and called the police who arrived shortly thereafter. The boys ran and stashed the "loot" and hid in the neighborhood. Our possessions ( with the exception of whatever they shoved in their pockets) were recovered because of the driver who called the police. That person had a general respect for others and an awareness that caused him to do the right thing instead of driving right on by. The teens who broke into our house, had a lack of respect for others, and a lack of self control. Later the teens were caught when one of the mothers found my credit card in her sons room and called the police . Her decision to do…
While the neighborhood that I live in is fine by my standards, there are a few problems that if they were solved, would make the neighborhood a better place. One of these problems is coyotes. A few times when I went outside, I would see the garbage rifled through. I used to think it was a raccoon until I realized I was mistaken. One night, I was coming home from my friend's house and I had to put something from my car into the garbage. As I was walking to the garbage I heard a noise like someone moving the garbage. As I turned the corner, I stopped dead in my tracks. Not even fifteen feet in front of me, was a coyote. It had been picking away at scraps of food that my family had thrown away. When the coyote saw me, it got startled and darted…
