I could not even imagine how a human can threat another one like animals, as if they were and inferior or less because of the skin color. The idea of being able to read a book that was written by someone that lived during this years of brutality amazed me. Although all the slave narratives are similar in some respects; Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was comparatively different from Olaudah Equiano’s and Venture Smith’s slave narratives. The major contrasts start in the beginning; Jacobs’ was born into slavery, whereas Equiano and Smith were native Africans who were captured and brought to America. By being born into slavery I believe that she had a different mentality of what being a slave was, unlike the other two authors who had to learn the language and had to adapt to a completely different environment. The Influence of Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Harriet Jacobs, in the preface to the book, wrote: I do earnestly desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition of two millions of women at the South, still in bondage, suffering what I suffered, and most of them far worse. I want to add my testimony to that of abler pens to convince the people of the Free States what Slavery really is (335). With this statement, Jacobs specified her purpose for writing and her intended audience. This perception gives readers an understanding of why she chose to include what she did in her story as well as to why she chose to exclude other details. Even though this work is presented as a narrative of her own life situations, there were many occasions when she described conditions of which she was not directly involved. For example, she titled one chapter "Sketches of Neighboring Slaveholders" and dedicated this section to recounting some of the disturbing experiences of other slaves from other plantations. It was her hope to paint a picture of slavery as a cruel and immoral institution. She did certainly include many of her own experiences, but she was very careful in how she included them. She sought to gain the compassions of the middle class white women of the North to boost their protests against slavery. Her first mistress was nicer than most common masters since she taught Harriet how to read and write until the age of 12, when her mistress died. She stated at one point that she was happy to work for her because, “No toilsome or disagreeable duties were imposed upon me. A look at chapters V, VI, and VII of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl revolves around a teenage slave girl and the control placed over her by her slave owner. The passage goes to reflect the atrocities placed over many slaves of the south in that time. It goes to show that these poor individuals had no power over the system in place over them and that they had to submit to the rule of those masters above them regardless of how heinous the act was.
