Inca Class Structure
The Incas first settled in this area around 1200 C.E. The center of the Inca Empire was the capital city of Cuzco, which was located in a valley high in the mountains of southern Peru. The Inca empire stretched almost 2,500 miles. Almost 10 million people lived under Inca rule. They built cities, dug irrigation canals, and developed special classes of workers. They also built good roads and created a message system using runners.

Culture/Society The Incas society was based on a strictly organized class structure. There were three broad classes the emperor, nobles, and commanders. As Inca empire grew, its class structure became more complex.

    The Inca’s new system of government allowed the Inca to control and maintain their vast empire. Their sophisticated and organized system of government was based upon the trading of items and doing labor for the nation rather than using currency. Part of the Inca government was divided into many small communities, called Ayllu, with families that were in charge of organizing labor forces, farming projects, and the distribution of land (Benson page 185).
