In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg: An Analysis
Unlike the expected classic style based on order and control within defined limits, composers of the romantic era emphasized the freedom of expressions, and continuous pursuit of the unattainable. Program music during the Romantic Music Period was completely instrumental. Romantic composers wrote their music based on images or events. It tends to present the listener with a specific experience other than sitting in front of an orchestra. The structure and “experience” evoked by mystery piece number two is very similar to “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. Therefore I believe the mystery piece number two must have been program music, or specifically in this case incidental music, from the romantic era. Both pieces start of slowly; low strings play simple chords then a quick pause before it repeats. The low strings in “In the Hall of the Mountain King” are accompanied by the sounds of bassoons. While in example number two, the low strings are followed by percussion instruments. The opening starts with low strings in both pieces creating a moderate tempo. The audience is slowly being sent off into the beginning of a wild chase. When the theme first appears in each piece, it is played in an upbeat tone. Grieg chooses to incorporate an upward scalar motion followed by a series a leaps. Similarly, in example number two the theme is played in a “racing” manor where the melody sounds disjunct. The chase seems to continue as the theme played repeatedly alternating between major and minor. “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” the theme is then played in a high range by the violins with accents of woodwinds. The woodwinds suddenly take over the theme while the violins play a trill. It presents some short of struggle during the chase. The example on the other hand asserts the break in the chase with the addition of cymbals as the theme increases.
In example number two, the piece slows down significantly in the middle section. Simple chords are played in

The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. The second movement was an Andante. It started with the horn and flute playing with monophonic texture. This created a calm sound that brought on a feeling warmth indoors on a cold winter night. It was in a minor mode and in triple meter. The middle of the movement included a great deal of dissonance and had an atonal rhythm that felt a bit unsettling. The end of the movement had the same calm melody as the beginning. It…

The first movement of the composition begins with a solo from only the strings family. A soft, consistent melody is played and the violin dominates the other instruments in this piece. The tone color at the beginning of this piece is relatively light which symbolizes the characteristics of a nuturing mother. As expected from a classical piece, the dynamics of the piece suddenly change, and there is a slight crescendo in the piece during the following measures of the composition. The tempo of the composition grows quicker in pace which portrays another chapter in the story, signalizng another movement of the piece. A violinist them performs a solo that plays alot that is also quick, yet play alot on the concept of pitch. It can be heard that the violin goes from very low ranges to fairly high range in pitch to emphasize the great amount of emotion in the piece.…

The third movement is called the Allegro it is a rapid movement and is a scherzo in C minor. It has three sections in this movement such as A (scherzo), B (trio), and A’ (scherzo). The A (scherzo) has a rhythmic pattern of short-short-short-long and resembles the basic motive of the first movement. The B section (trio) mode appears to be major and sounds hurried and energized. In this section you can hear the cellos and basses. The A’ (scherzo) sounds gloomy and you can hear the clarinets and violins well. Then at the end of this movement the gloominess comes to an end and it becomes happier…

Analyzing the structure of “Symphony No. 5” and “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” can reveal the similarities of the two pieces. As both pieces are composed in a sonata-allegro form, they are divided into three main sections: the exposition, the development, and the recapitulation. Both works begin with an exposition, a major theme that will be prevalent throughout the song. The exposition is followed by a second theme that contrasts with the first, but still retains the main theme of the song. Both pieces have a second theme that incorporates a slower rhythm to give the listener a break from the more dramatic tones of the first. The second theme then transitions into the closing theme, which wraps up the first two themes and prepares the audience for the next section of the piece. After playing the exposition for the first time, each piece then repeats the exposition a second time, allowing listeners to experience theme again before the development. The development is a section of a piece that takes the main theme of the exposition and manipulates it. Following the development is the final section, the recapitulation. In the recapitulation, the three themes from the exposition are repeated, but with slight differences that give the audience a different feel for the piece. Both works also end with a coda, a section added to the end of a piece that repeats the main theme of the piece, and brings…

The second piece I am going to discuss is the Symphony No.2 in D Minor, Op. 36 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827). It was in the Classical period, and the genre of it is Symphony because of it had four movements. The first movement is in the Adagio molto form, the second movement is in the Larghetto form, the third movement is in the Scherzo: Allegro form which breaks the rule of most of symphonies, and the fourth movement is in the Allegro molto form. The length of the work is about thirty-five minutes and…

Program music is a term for instrumental music written in accordance with a poem, a story, or some other literary source (Kerman, Tomlinson, 233). Program music was not new in the Romantic era but it made music even more expressive because it included that literary connection. The word “program” refers to the story the music has a connection to. Operas usually coincide with program music. A program symphony was an entire symphony spelled out movement by movement (Kerman, Tomlinson, 254). An example of program symphony would be Fantastic Symphony by Hector Berlioz. When this was performed he actually handed out his own made up program and the music of the symphony acted as a narrator (Kerman, Tomlinson, 233). The music in this piece followed the story all the way through to the end. Hector actually composed this symphony under the influence of opium. In order to narrate a story he used the orchestra in many different and creative ways. He had to ensure that the story was expressed in his own unique and strange way.…

    Lark Ascending Analysis

To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…

I believe that selection B is a swing piece. The song feels smooth and danceable while featuring a full and large sound along with its other musical characteristics led me to believe it is swing. The piece featured a distinct call and response characteristic at 0:12-0:19, first the woodwind instruments play there note then the brass seems to respond by playing their note. The piece also has a strong form, throughout the song there is a balanced amount of repetition and contrast to make the song appealing. Additionally, since the piece is swing, it has a 32-bar form and subdivided beats that are long then short, which is a standard rhythmic quality of swing music. The melody overall seems tuneful in nature, because of the songs repeating phrases…

My view on “The Heart of Darkness” automatically came to me as a racial story, which encourages racism. The wording used in the story such as, light and dark made it seem like Joseph Conrad was referring to people of darker skin color as “monstrous” and “inhuman”. “The earth seemed unearthly. We are accustomed to look upon the shackled form of a conquered monster, but there – there you could look at a thing monstrous and free. It was unearthly, and the men were – No, they were not inhuman. Well, you know, that was the worst of it – this suspicion of their not being inhuman.” (Pg.13). Throughout the reading the main character Marlow says how they would go to places where Africans were fee and it seemed “unearthly” to them. This quote shows how people of a darker skin color were discriminated against and were considered a lower class of people. Usually an author will incorporate certain things into their writing to make a point that people are constantly overlooking the racism, power, femininity, identity, madness, and even fate. This does in fact alter the way a person thinks and views the world.…

The first song I heard is Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is written at 1880, a romantic period music. It is a sonata allegro form, which consist an exposition, a development, and a recapitulation. However, it is hard for me to find connection between three parts when I was at the concert. Moreover, I did not realize there is three parts until I did the research after the concert. I was really into music and picturing the Romeo and Julia scene in my mind when I heard the symphony playing this piece.…
