Kaufmann claims that the Sphinx was built using forced manual labor from the slaves of Khafre, but Hadingham and Hutchinson disprove this theory. There were between sixteen hundred and two thousand workers, and according to their diets, they were not slaves (Hadingham). Workers also had bunkers that allowed them a place to sleep when they were not working on the Sphinx (Hadingham). A motive for regular citizens to join the construction was religious obligations (Hutchinson). Hutchinson also claims that the labor could have been a "tax" for the workers being housed and fed. Lehner does not go into any detail about whether or not workers built the Sphinx, but instead focuses on how the Sphinx was built and why.
