Improving High School Students with Learning Difficulties in Math
AN INQUIRY ON IMPROVING HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES IN MATHEMATICS

Introduction

Mathematics is the abstract study of topics encompassing quantity, structure, space, change, and other properties; it has no generally accepted information. The mathematical aspects of something: "the mathematics of general relativity". It is present in any field whether Science, Livelihood, Health, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, Architecture. Therefore This case study should focus on investigating factors of leading learning difficulties in mathematics, and developing strategies for improving mathematics learning for students with learning difficulties.

Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number, logic, space and structure. It provides both a framework for thinking and a means of symbolic communication that is powerful, logical, concise and precise. It also provides a means by which people can understand and manage their environment. Essential mathematical activities include calculating and computing, abstracting, conjecturing, proving, applying, investigating, modeling, and problem posing and solving. This study is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way which takes into account the needs and aspirations of a wide range of students. It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in a technological society, and confidence in making effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques and processes
High school students tend to have complications and they loose enthusiasm on in this field. As Galileo once said “The great book of nature can be read only by those who know the language in which it was written. And that language is Mathematics” adding, “Math is the way to understand all sorts of things in the world around us.” The main reason for studying mathematics to an advanced level is

Therefore maths education is widely believed to be the single most important aspect to establishing opportunities for young people; unfortunately, many struggle with mathematics and become indifferent as they continue to encounter obstacles with regard to engagement (Anthony & Walshaw, 2009). Knowing a person’s ability to learn is greatly impacted by teaching beliefs and practices, it is imperative that educators are able to develop and deliver information in an inclusive and cohesive learning environment. Reviewing and developing improved pedagogy to reflect these changes in understanding learning and teaching beliefs in response to the changing needs of society. This essay will explore past teaching practices, the recent findings regarding maths learning development and pedagogy, comparison of learning theory, and the way ahead for improvements to mathematic pedagogy utilising constructivist learning theory within maths-learning environment.…

Mathematics for common education have been a process of memorizing away from the child's natural development, apart from understanding, reasoning and interest. The problem then lies not in the major or minor child's ability to understand or the age at which to learn mathematics. These are just prejudices of adults; rather the problem lies in the way in which we teach them.…

One of the challenges faced by adolescents is the belief they are “not good at math”. This may be imparted by their parents belief they were not good at mathematics and do not ask more from their children. There needs to be a shift from this belief from all adults involved. They must recognize and affirm the importance of mathematical literacy for all. In the Ministry’s Numeracy Report (2004), students need the “ability to deal with the fundamental notions of number and change in order to make sense of mathematical information presented in everyday contexts” (Paulos, 1988, pg.). Mathematical literacy in important for both employment and post-secondary admissions. Therefore, as teachers, we need to take advantage of the abundant opportunities for fostering mathematical literacy across the curriculum. As with Ms. Hastings, has a strong belief in the “Growth Mindset” by setting high expectations and showing student they can learn as opposed to the belief of “either you are good at math or…

Among the many difficult mathematical concepts for children to understand, fractions ranks as one of the most difficult. The complex concept poses a lot of problems not only for children, but for adults as well. The only way to build a conceptual understanding of fractions is to build on children’s informal knowledge of partitioning and fair share. Throughout the paper I will discuss how we can use these simpler topics as a starting point in the uphill battle to understanding this extremely difficult concept. I will identify common partitioning strategies used by children, and shed light on the way these strategies can be used to tackle the remaining four subconstructs, as well as guide in the understanding of multiplication and division…

Music, art/design, and even athletics are built on mathematics. A pianist can benefit from patterns and sequences when composing much the same way that a golfer can benefit from math-based physics, trigonometry, and even statistics when driving. No matter which avenue a student pursues, math will somehow be present. It is not only the responsibility of a nurse, an engineer, or a physicist to know mathematics. Rather, it is in each student’s best interest that they apply, or at least consider, mathematics in all areas of…

High-school students should be familiar with this formula a2 + b2 = c2. No doubt, that is a well-known formula to define angles in a certain triangle found by Pythagoras, so called Pythagoras as well. Talking about Pythagoras, it reminds us to a certain subject namely Mathematics. Mathematics used to be my favorite subject when I was a high-school student. The term ‘favorite’ commonly refers to something we love best. I have some reasons why I used to like studying Mathematics. First, Mathematics is one of the basic sciences, so it would be very impressive for me to learn even master the subject. Second, Mathematics taught me how to think logically. The last, my teacher made Mathematics easy and fun subject to learn.…
