EVACUATED FROM THE MRT The lady was all smiles and her sparkling white teeth glittered at the two boys when she heard their query. George’s younger brother squirmed excitedly beside him as he hung onto every word of the friendly station master, making sure that they got the directions right. The bustling crowd of families and bubbly voices of children merry-making were another usual Sunday sight st the MRT station. They thanked the pretty lady and began their onerous way through the crowd to the designated platform to wait for their train. George and his brother were going to their cousin’s birthday party. The younger sibling could hardly contain his excitement and a silly grin was plastered across his cherubic face. The train rattled in shortly and they nudged their way into the crowded cabin. There were no empty seats so they battled for a small standing spot near the exit. The train had moved for barely five minutes when suddenly a deafening blast resounded through the air! Their backs took a hard hit, George toppled forward and his brother wailed in pain as he fell to the floor beside him. The train came to a sudden halt. The lights in the cabin started flickering portentously, darkness threatened to take over. Thick columns of smoke were invading the cabin! Children started crying and screaming. Some adults became hysterical and started banging their fists on the windows in a bid to break out of the cabin. The crowd was gettting out of control. People were going amok! An acrid smell of burning fumes stung their noses. George held his brother’s hand tightly and told him to bend as low as he could. The outrageous scene of pandemonium petrified them. At that defining moment, a voice came through the public announcement system, “All passengers please remain calm. We are evacuating the train for emergency reasons. For your own safety, please follow the officers and move in an orderly manner out of the tunnel.” The announcement comfirmed their worst
