Important Person in Your Life
To say that only one person inspired me in my life would be the understatement of the decade. Many people go through life with only one inspirational person that they always look up to. I have had the privilege of having twenty-nine people inspire me all at once in a way that no one else could. In the 2008-2009 school year, I was informed by a friend of an audition for the first production of Rent at the Orlando Youth Theater. Right away I jumped to this opportunity to be in this world renowned musical. To be in a musical like this, which represents the struggles friends go through in a “measure of a year”, was a blessing in itself. Going into it, I thought, “Here I am, auditioning for one of the most impactful shows of my time, and to be performing this with all these people who share the same love as I do is going to be a great experience.” What I did not know was that the people I would meet would change who I was completely.
At the first day of rehearsals, everyone was getting to know each other, remembering names, forgetting them a minute later, becoming “best friends” right away with some people, and rounding off into cliques already. At first, we all came into the show excited to be a part of this amazing production of Rent. Who would not want to be a part of something as incredible as this? We all knew the lyrics to every song and could recite the musical forewords and backwards completely unaware of the words we were singing or saying and how they would affect us in the end. Like all theatrical productions, the start is always the rockiest. We all had our quarrels with each other, which of course caused many problems.
As we continued, the problems seemed to slowly disappear. During the rehearsal process, we became family all because of one person’s experience. Kailee Brooks was the one person who truly knew what this show was about. Without her, I do not think any of us would know the real meaning of love, family, and friends.

From singing Phantom of the Opera in the shower to pretending to be Mimi Marquez swinging from the wooden bars and ladder of my bunk bed belting melodies from my favorite show, Rent. My mother implanted theatre into my heart since the beginning. But I was always missing just one aspect of the magic I knew, performing. I yearned to hear the patter of my feet on the stage, for my voice to echo throughout a theater during a rehearsal, to transform into a different person and tell their story. But when I was younger I guess it just wasn't my time yet. My family didn’t really have the money to enroll me in any sort of performing arts program and our town lacked a theatre program in schools until high school. Performing in the comforts of my own bedroom would have to do until I got to high school. Once I got to high school I eagerly auditioned for the 2 shows they produced a year, desperate to finally be on a stage. Yet, there was something missing from the experience, I wasn’t aware of it at the time and it wasn’t until my friend Kevin pulled me aside during one of our rehearsals and informed me about the pre professional theatre company he was apart of. Soon enough I convinced my mother to sign me up for theatre camp at Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts. Essentially it’s where I found myself as a performer and as a person. Before the program I hadn’t ever taken risks or made choices on stage as a character and as myself in life. If I was ever in a place with the opportunity to meet new people I wouldn’t take advantage of it, usually I’d wait until people came up to talk to me because I just couldn’t bring myself to talk to people. My confidence was at an all time low before Gaslamp, I didn't believe that I could accomplish anything. However, spending 8 hours a day for a month with a group of accepting, loving, intellectual, inspiring people changed me and I learned so much about myself that I…

On September 22, I went to the 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical put on by Capital University. In the play, kids compete to be the spelling bee champion for their school, and it details their lives and why the spelling bee is important to them. In the beginning, I thought it would be a very fun and witty play, but it was much deeper than I expected. The kids had real life and relatable problems that even as an adult I could imagine my life in similar scenarios. A couple of the kids were incredibly smart, and even though they prided themselves on their school work and their intelligence, but they have something fundamentally missing in their lives. This can be found in many people’s lives, so even though the play was about a group of kids it had a much more serious underlying theme.…

The things I learned from this experience are not solely related to the musical. I learned that musicals, and not understanding the arts very well, is a great way to bond with people. You can basically bond with someone over anything, granted after that experience you might not talk to them again, but it creates the opportunity for friendship. The arts in general create strong relationships…

When you think of someone influential in your life it’s usually someone very close to you. To a child it’s usually a superhero or one of their parents. To me this is not the case. Kate Janke, a music teacher and theatre arts instructor at the high school of Park Center, is one individual who has changed me as a person, and made me who I am today. Ms. Janke’s qualities of directing in the theatre program, teaching the subject of music, and having an open, down to earth type of personality helped shape me to be who I am today.…

Giving people an escape for an hour or two is how I’m trying to positively influence the world now. Sharing the wisdom of a play with an audience creates a very genuine experience that virtually erases the line between performers and observers because both indulge in the moment. Barnard’s Theater program gives me the opportunity to reach out to more people, and learn in one of the most artistic cities in the world. I have a gentle demeanor but my will is strong. Barnard nurtures girls with unstoppable determination, and I believe that I stand in the same category. They produce women who take on the world and change it for the…

On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…

Theatre was not something that came naturally to me. When I came to Gautier High School, I was a quiet, reserved middle schooler just as ready to piss his pants as any other in his grade with the exception that I had the knowledge to not show it. I had yet to speak above a whisper and my yell was akin to a mouse’s yawn. In the words of a few teachers, I was “the most socially maladjusted child they had ever seen.” I was not a hot-shot and I most certainly didn’t crave to be the center of attention. So, in the moment of insanity that was my ninth grade year, I decided to audition for a school play. In the process of destroying preconceived notions, I met the singular most influential person, the director and theatre teacher, Amanda Brown.…

Rent is personally one of my all time favorite productions. It is a Broadway musical and motion picture that is set in New York City’s East Village during a time period when HIV and AIDS was a common issue. This musical expresses many other issues through its content. Most of these issues are things that the characters must learn to deal with and try to fix throughout the span of the film. Some of the problems depicted are the characters struggling with drugs, understanding sexuality, paying their rent, and living with HIV/AIDS. These different issues each contribute to the fact that in this world there are many different types of people who are often viewed in many different ways.…

My schoolmates may not know me by name, but they can tell something about the guy who is damn good at singing musicals. After he finished singing on the stage, the principal jumped to his feet clapping hands. Parents watching online hurriedly posted messages of praise, eager to find out whose kid the singer was. I, proud but not vain, had been accustomed to such reactions. For me, loving and practicing musicals has been a long, inspiring journey; it means much: a talent, a hobby, a way to relax, and even a label!…

Through his hard work, determination, and love for family, he has set an example for me to follow and has shaped me into the person I am today. I watched the live production of “RENT”. The biggest issue in the musical “RENT” was that, everyone was poor, and HIV positive, and was struggling to survive in Alphabet City in Manhattan, New York. They were all young musical artist. The musical “RENT” showed how times can be hard for people, and some don’t notice due to the fact that they have everything they need in life, like money. One of the characters in the musical use to be a part of the group and then later on forgot his morals and where he started from I definitely think that was a big point of attack.…
