Importance of Punctuality
Importance of Punctuality

Punctuality is not only important as a United States Sailor but also as a properly functioning member of society. I feel punctuality ties well in the core value of honor and commitment. Punctuality is also important in maintaining respect amongst your colleagues. Punctuality is a vital piece of the puzzle for the completion of the mission. When I think of the connection between punctuality and commitment, I think about the real life scenario of life and death on the battlefield. In a highly kinetic environment like the battlefield, arriving where you need to be in the appropriate time can directly influence the life or death of one of your shipmates. It is highly important that those who you work for and work for you can be able to trust that you will be where and when you are supposed to be at all times. It is important that we always remain aware of our need to maintain accountability amongst ourselves and those who work with us and be on time because every minute counts. “It has been said that time is money. That proverb understates the case. Time is a great deal more than money. If you have time you can obtain money—usually. But though you have the wealth of a cloak-room attendant at the Carlton Hotel, you cannot buy yourself a minute more time than I have, or the cat by the fire has.” –Arnold Bennett, How to Live on Twenty-Four Hours a Day, 1910 When you don’t use punctuality, you are damaging people’s trust in your abilities as team member. Without trust, functioning as a military member and a healthcare provider would be near impossible. Punctuality is also a direct order from the chain of command which a military member should follow and not being on time is disobeying a direct order which will lead to losing the trust of your chain of command and their respect too. “Soldiers should be minutemen. Punctuality is one of the most valuable habits a soldier can possess.” –Christopher Columbus Andrews, Hints to

I am writing this essay because on January 17th, 2012, I failed to report to my appointed place of duty at the proper time. I accidentally turned off my alarm clock instead of hitting the snooze button, which I usually do. This does not excuse anything, but it is the reason. There are many reasons why being on time is important, both inside and outside of the military. Failing to be at a place you are supposed to be at the right time can cause so many problems, including losing your job, receiving counseling statements, having to write ridiculously long essays which take up more free time than you really have, receiving an Article 15, and creating more work for your peers.…

It is important to be on time, both in the Army and in the civilian sector, for multiple reasons. Among these reasons, the ones that stand out to me the most are unprofessionalism, being fired, receiving adverse disciplinary actions, and failing your co-workers/comrades. Being late or tardy to work can cause not only yourself but everyone at your place of employment problems.…

Being on time is important in everything you do especially in the military. By not being on time you can cause problems for not just you but other people as well. For instance if you are to be replacing someone and you are not on time you can make that person late because they had to wait for you. By just one person being late can disrupt the events of an entire day. An example of this is a platoon is going out to a field exercise for training and a soldier is late by fifteen minutes that can cause that entire platoon to be behind in getting out to the field exercise disrupting the agenda set by the platoon leader and platoon sargent. If you are late to an appointment you are taking up valuable time that could be used by another person. Another reason it is always important to be on time is if you are going to a job interview and you are not on time you could loose the position because it is a first impression of how your work ethic could be. Even if you just make plans with some friends to see a movie, you should be on time because if you are late you and your friends will miss part of the movie. In the military you can receive sever punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for not being on time. Some of the consequences can include loss of rank, loss of pay, and having to pull extra duty while under restriction. Repeatedly being late in the military could lead to a discharge from service. Similarly if you are constantly late for civilian employment you will face punishment that could include having your hours cut back, your earnings garnished, or possibly fired from that position. After creating a history of being late to a point that you are let go from your job, it can become difficult to find future employment due to the fact that employers will contact your previous line of employment to find out why you were released from your position within that company. Further more after making a history to your friends, family and your employers of not…

    Why Not to Be Late

Punctuality shows that you are responsible, trustworthy and can follow directions. Punctuality isn't just an order that the Army requires, but also a good personal trait that is a reflection of a person’s character, it shows that you have personal integrity and self-discipline. While some of us are occasionally late due to circumstances beyond our control, repeated tardiness shows a lack of respect for other people and their time. If someone is late continually that shows that they do not care about what their NCO tells them. If you don't use your time wisely, you can never get it back. It is a very special resource in that you cannot store it or save it for later. Promptness is not only a duty, but is also a part of good manners; it is favorable to fortune, reputation, influence, and usefulness. Lack of punctuality is a theft of someone else's time and a complete lack of respect for others. You should be punctual in everything you do. Punctuality goes hand in hand with military discipline. Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from the day one. The way you can show military discipline is by obeying all orders that are given to you and performing them all in a military manner and also to the best of your abilities. Showing up late to anything also shows a great lack in professionalism on my part. Not showing up on time makes me look unprofessional and also anyone else in my chain of command look bad because I showed up late for work. Not showing up on time makes…

In the military attention to detail is key and very important and should be a part of everything you do. An example of attention of detail would be to bring canteens and jerry cans to refill canteens but without checking to make sure there is water in them they are useless. Another would be safety rules on the range. You may know them but if you don’t pay attention you could forget to put your weapon back on safe after firing. Also if you forget to tighten a bolt to the right torque it could cause something to go wrong and destroy millions of dollars of equipment and get someone injured in the process or even killed.…

On a small scale, being punctual for formations and general points of duty allows leaders to ensure accountability for their soldiers, address notes and tasks for the day, and promotes organization within the unit. In a larger picture, everyone’s responsibilities for the day are dependent on the entire unit to be where they need to be at the appropriate time. For example, in the event of a company going to the range the armor has to be available to open the arms room to issue the weapons as leaders need ample time to take accountability of their soldiers and to thoroughly conduct pre-combat checks and pre-combat inspections. Support units are obligated to arrive on time due to their responsibility to provide ammunition and transportation. Something as simple as the armor being late can cause a domino effect for the entire mission.…

The definition of punctuality is to be on time or arrive in a timely manner. Punctuality is an important trait in this world that we live in now, especially in a place like the Marine Corps. Without punctuality nothing would get done. Even in a normal civilian job. Nowadays if someone is not punctual in the civilian world, that means someone is probably going to lose their job. In the Marine Corps if someone is not punctual, that could be the difference between someone living or dying. The world as we know it would be a mess without punctuality. There is a saying in the Marine Corps, “complacency kills’. That is indeed a fact because someone being lazy and not punctual could completely destroy something that someone else worked so hard to build. Or it could cause worse consequences. If we were not punctual, the place we call home might not even exist because we would be too lazy to want to show up to anything in time. If we did not show up to do things in time, chances are, when we do arrive to do our duties; we probably wouldn’t even end up doing it. In the end who would really tell us what to do if everyone was not punctual and lazy. Nobody would. There would be no such thing as television, or internet, or cellphones, or technology in general. I know most people right now are very materialistic, even in the Marine Corps. Without such devices and electronics, we would probably live very boring lives and never get a whole lot of things done. War would also be a lot different without the weapons and strategies we have. Not being in time to formations and other things such as events, can have great consequences. It is considered going UA when not being where you’re supposed to be at the certain time. If an individual is UA too many times he/she will receive negative counseling. If the individual continues to be UA, then the negative counseling’s will turn into a page 11. If the individual continues to be UA even further, then the individual will receive and NJP. One…

The most significant effect of not being punctual is the student will miss classes, and that’s will cause the students to miss information. This information could range from pop quizzes to homeworks due dates. Furthermore, if the students permanently come late to the classes or misses it, they would not know about the homeworks due date or any information about it. Additionally, the students who are not punctual have a bigger chance of having lower grades on pop quizzes. Consequently, not respecting time will absolutely determine the total grade. Also, if the student has an assigned presentation to do and he/she are not punctual, he/she will fail to present what is assigned for them.
