Importance of my duty
“The Importance of My Duties as a Solider”
PV2 Scott, Alexis
18 October 2013
Leadership
Growing up from a military background (dad, brother, aunt, and uncle), my parents taught me the importance of being a responsible person since I was a child. They instilled guidance, responsibilities, keeping commitment, and being a leader not a follower at an early age. With these values it carried me through elementary school, middle school and high school. I received good grades, was on the swimming team, during 2010 – 2010. I encouraged teammates to keep trying when they didn’t do well in competition. I did this to keep the team motivated. I had to show leadership, the volleyball team, which I had to be a team player & cheerleading which I had to demonstrate teamwork.
I demonstrated leadership at an early age by working as a volunteer student with the Park Rangers on nature and outdoors projects throughout Prince Georges’ County Maryland. I assisted Rangers in tree plantings, stream cleanups, trail enhancements, wetland preservations and nesting box construction. For doing a great job I was offered to the opportunity to go sailing in Baltimore, MD.
I also demonstrated leadership when I volunteered at the American Historical Association by directing all the correspondence to staff members. I answered all calls referring the calls to appropriate staff members. I typed a variety of materials on the computer such as letters & labels. In addition, I was giving tasks and made sure I was done when I had a deadline date for completion.
Volunteering for the above tasks provided me with the skills I had to get a paying job when I was in high school and during the summer months. I worked while going to school maintaining my grades at good standard. One place I worked at was Party City as a stock clerk. I demonstrated great work ethics. Stocking was a big responsibility since this was a new store.

Throughout my high school years, I maintained various leadership roles. The first of which was serving as a section leader in the marching band for three years. As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

A self-employed business man once said, “The best example of leadership is leading by example” (Jerry McClain). He describes a true leader, a pioneer whose morals and selflessness guide her to guide others. She is an inspiration, and a beacon of hope for all to follow. I share this passion for helping and guiding by example, and as a member of the National Junior Honor Society, I would seek to better the community just as I do every day inside and outside of the classroom.…

It is difficult to narrow down the many instances where I have showed great leadership but many can be found in my involvements in teamwork. I have been looked to as a leader and have taken responsibility for various group projects. I have discovered much about fairness, compromise, and responsible qualities that are required to be a "good" leader. Often, I have had to sacrifice my own free time and personal desires for the benefit of the group. I believe this is the most important part of being a leader, the ability to sacrifice individual time and desires for the overall gain of the people that you are leading.…

In the past, I have demonstrated leadership as both the assistant manager of a frozen yogurt shop and as a leader in the University Honors Program as a member of the Honors Student Council. I have also exhibited leadership throughout my academic and sports career by acting as a role model for my peers and leading by example. As a leader, I know that I do not need to be the most vocal, and instead understand that I should set the standard for my peers to follow. My past leadership…

I am able to help my peers by suggesting ways to improve on themselves by studying with me before a test or working together on homework problems. In addition to scholarship and leadership, I am very active in service activities outside of school. At my mother’s house, we volunteer for a dog organization and foster pit-bulls who are injured and in need of nurturing. I also go with the Williamstown Jazz Band to perform at elderly homes in order to cheer up the residents. Furthermore, I will gladly partake in school sponsored activities without delay. I believe that I have exceled in the field of leadership. Leadership is the position or function of a leader and a person who guides or directs a group. My advisory voted anonymously for an advisory leader in ninth grade, and I became my advisory representative by getting the most votes. As the advisory representative I attended meetings and helped organize and plan for advisory. Another example for leadership is in the summer I was the head counselor for Fun in the Sun Summer Camp. My responsibilities as the head counselor was to make sure all counselors were doing everything they were supposed to do, and to run counselor meetings and I had my own group of kids to watch after. The final example of leadership is babysitting my mom’s close friend Marina Dubin’s son. My duties’ for being his babysitter was to watch and take care of him while he was awake and asleep. I…

Leadership is a lifestyle, not a role one adopts. Leadership requires strength and power, but also the ability to empathize and recognize others' needs. As a high school student, I have had many opportunities to be a leader, whether it be through clubs, group projects, or extracurricular activities. During my Junior year, I assistant directed the play Steel Magnolias under the eye of my drama teacher as well as a college student director. This role allowed me to learn the ropes of directing as well as take care of the six girls cast in the show. I adapted the role of the "stage mom," making sure every hair was curled to perfection and every prop was in its place, as well as ensuring their lines were memorized and their staging was proper. I…

For the past three years, I have been the Key Club class representative. Throughout my experience, I learned that leadership is essential in volunteer operations, whether providing food for the hungry on a small scale or raising money for people in need. My role as class representative revolved around my ability to attract and retain quality volunteers. I was responsible for delegating essential tasks to the volunteers in a fair, effective manner. As the class representative, I was initially a volunteer coordinator, one of my initiatives was to allow volunteers to choose which tasks they felt most comfortable with. I had to get to know the members and understand their limits and play on their strength .With that knowledge, I was able to identify…

Out of all the times that I used my leadership to help a group of people, there is one that stands out as clear as day to me. It would be the Great Shakeout Drill which millions of people practice how to drop, cover, and hold on during drills. By participating with the Community Emergency Response Team club in this drill, it is a great way to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes wherever one is at. This leads me to have a positive influence on others as it gave me insight as to what I can take from this experience and learn from it in a positive angle. Firstly, it gave me a sense of being a leader to everyone on campus as leading students and teachers where to go when an emergency happens. By doing this, it gave me…
