Importance of Kindness
Kindness can be seen in many perspectives. There are people that think it is necessary and then there are selfish people that think to their selves that they did not do anything for me so why should I? Kindness is something everyone should offer to those around them. Being kind to others shows to others that you are a positive individual and that you are generous. Showing compassion to others brightens their moods and enlightens their day. Kindness is an act which can start off as a gesture and can end with a strong friendship.

A reputation declares what kind of person you are whether it is good or bad. Nobody wants to be known as a discourteous person so how can we be seen as a positive individual? The best solution is to be a kind character. For example, if a boy in high school does not do his work, bullies others and is impolite then others would decide that his reputation would be negative. But if he were to be a strong student, friendly to everyone and was very generous, then he would be recognized as a positive and kind individual. Jesse Jackson is a very wise man and he knew exactly what he was meant when he said, “Never look down on anybody unless you are helping them up”. This means that you should always be kind to others no matter what the circumstances are. If there is someone who needs some help then you should be kind to them and help them up. What this does is that if there was an event that caused the individual to be depressed then a positive attitude and some generosity can enlighten their day. For example, a homeless person lives on the streets begging people for money so that he can afford a cheap meal. But if someone were to feed them a proper meal then this would brighten their spirit and that could make their day. Kindness does much more for people than what we could have ever expected.

How many friendships can be created with one being an obnoxious and arrogant individual? This is why to make friends you have to offer kindness

I love to meet new people and connect with them. I have friends from different religion and cultures and I love to learn about their lifestyles, customs and beliefs. In my opinion, friendliness involves greeting strangers with a smile, connecting with people effectively, always paying attention to the people while having a conversation and responding to them appropriately. There are lots of examples of friendliness around us. Greeting the checkout person at the grocery store, engaging in conversation with the person in line next to you, offering to help a person in need of help, smiling at a stranger or someone you know, offering a ride to your neighbor, whose car is in the repair shop might be some of the good examples of friendliness. I can share a story from my personal experience related to friendliness. There was an old man who used to live next to our house. He had two daughters who lived in abroad and his wife had passed away. So, he lives all alone by himself. Once I offered him to help him clean his apartment, he happily accepted my offer. Then, we cleaned his apartment together and he thanked me for being so kind to him. The characteristic of friendliness goes a long way to promote happiness and peace in any situation or relationship. It fosters understanding, respect and justice. It creates a sense of community and caring. We all need the feel to be wanted and loved and friendliness helps with…

“Kindness” and “hope” are two simple words. One could look them up in a dictionary, define them, write them, and do what they wish with them. However, to know and to act are two different things. Kindness can be define as “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” Kindness is doing your best to make sure that the people around you are happy. It is not being afraid to help others even when there is no way of them paying you back. Kindness is not just doing the right thing, but going above and beyond the call.…

    A Complicated Kindness

I recently read a book called A Complicated Kindness, by Miriam Toews. The protagonist is a teenage girl named Nomi. Nomi is growing up trapped in a small Mennonite community called East Village in the middle of nowhere, in Canada. All her life Nomi was told what to believe, with heavy emphasis on the belief that living dutifully and by the word of God in this life would guarantee salvation in the next. In Nomi’s town, you were either good or bad. There was no in between, no room for individuality or mistakes. Those who went through their life there quietly, going to church every Sunday and working at the local chicken slaughtering plant after graduation, were considered to be on their way up. Those were the people who at the end of a long, uneventful life, would be greeted happily by Jesus and live forever in his kingdom of glory. Those who broke out of the mould were doomed. Since non-conformists were clearly speeding down the highway to hell anyways, they were excommunicated from the church and forced to either leave the community or live without recognition from even their own family.…

As people mention the virtue, generosity, they always conceive of an image of a wealthy philanthropist who donates his money to people in need. However, in my opinion, the concept of generosity exceeds the narrow connotation of giving to others, and not only can rich people become generous; rather, generosity comprises of empathy to share others’ feelings, magnanimous tolerance towards other people, and returning to them with kindness.…

Staying out of your comfort zone and doing things with people that harm you and people you would normally never be around is a great way to be compassionate. The only way to get to where being compassionate towards everyone is to practice and continue to live an unselfish life. Showing empathy towards people good or bad and remembering that just like me, everyone wants to be happy and not to suffer. So by following what the Dalai Lama says I would try to help anybody that is suffering to be happy no matter the cost to my own…

An act of kindness can develop values for both the person receiving the aid and the person offering the support as well as community development. In this summary key points are discussed on altruism. The summary stems from an act of kindness, which was conducted by the author as a student of Capstone Course in Psychology/Psy 490. I presented money to a person who needed money for his or her next meal, without expecting anything in return. A person does not realize the degree of emotions involved in experiencing need nor true concern until he or she begins to offer support with no desire of reward.…

    A Complicated Kindness

“Fire and Rain” by James Taylor is a song mentioned in A Complicated Kindness that Nomi can relate to easily. James Taylor was born March, 12th 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts, although he was mainly raised in North Carolina. By age 14, Taylor was writing songs, singing, and had learned to play the guitar and cello. In 1966, he moved to New York City to form a band with some of his friends and by the end of the year they were performing regularly at cafes. Unfortunately, while in New York, Taylor lost himself in drug abuse for a time, but would later lead to the inspiration of some of his songs, including “Fire and Rain”. After he was back on track with his life, he recorded a few demos and had them sent to Paul McCartney, whose label signed Taylor immediately. A few weeks later, he fell back into his old habits of drug abuse, and was hospitalized in Massachusetts. After his recovery, in 1970, Taylor released his single “Fire and Rain” which was inspired by his experiences with drug abuse, depression, the suicide of his friend Suzanne, and the institutional psychiatric treatments he received. (“James Taylor Biography”).…

In chapter six, Nomi creates a very vivid memory of watching two black Mennonite dresses “flying around like crazy birds way up in the sky”. As she watched them fly all the way to her grandmother’s yard where she was, she remained fascinated, calling that, “even the best thing that ever happened to her.” She then said goodbye to the fallen dress when the spectacular show ended, like a little child who didn’t know the difference between a dress and a person. Shortly after recalling that memory, she asks Travis to stop by her grandma’s place so she can search for the dress.…

For some people they have the best life and get everything they need and want for themselves. For some people on the other hand they don't have it that way and get the short end of the stick. For the people you see and help It comes straight from the heart because they don't have it easy and from me to them I realize that by helping them just a little it could jumpstart them to a fresh life and show them we care. I realize that I have as much as I need and I always ask my parents for money and to go out places but some people don't even have homes or food to provide and eat. By helping out a needing hand it makes me realize that I don't need everything in the world and it should help other people realize to that by looking at the life you have if you're rich or wealthy to help someone in need is the right thing to do and what I like doing best.…

Martin Luther King Jr. wrote Strength to Love, but it is more of an assembly of his sermons. The emphasis of his sermons was of segregation in the U.S. This segregation he refers to is racial segregation. MLK provides the readers with ways to overcome this segregation and to make the world a better place, more of having God’s love at our core. He talks about having a tough mind and a tender heart and how if we give into society’s peer pressures that we can turn into the rich fool.…

Having the reputation of candid and dependable will lead you to have a lot of people trusting you and having your back when you need it. On the other hand if your reputation is to be a flake or deceitful you will lose friends and will not be looked at as someone to go to when looking for the truth. For example, on applications for jobs they ask you for your previous employers for the reason that if your employer has nothing good to say about you you will not be hired, but if you have exemplary comments from your former employer you will get hired immediately and looked at with higher expectations.Having a certain reputation can really tell you what you’ll receive from that…
