Importance of Chefs Uniform
The Importance of A Culinary Uniform In The Kitchen. A chef’s uniform consists of a toque (a chef’s hat), double breasted jacket, checkered pants, apron, and non slip shoes. Each one of these items plays a very important role in the safety of a chef in the kitchen. The hat, double breasted jacket, checker pants, non slip shoes, and apron all play an essential role and have their own piece of history behind why there worn in the kitchen. The uniform was a way to show unity in the kitchen and certain parts in the uniform are to show the different ranks in the kitchen brigade.

The wearing of a chef’s uniform dates back to the mid 19th century. The popular French chef Marie-Antoine Careme is credited for developing the current chef’s uniform. The white chef’s coat is meant to signify cleanliness. The chef coat plays a key role in the uniform of a chef. The white double breasted chef’s jacket is reversible so the person wearing it can hide stains. Because before there were washing machines the chefs would get there jackets dirty and could unbutton the jacket and button it back up on the other side. It kept the chef’s looking clean and presentable when making messy dishes before going out into the ding room to receive compliments on their dish. The thick material in the jacket is meant to protect the body from high heat in the kitchen as well as boiling liquids. Surprisingly the knotted buttons on the chef’s jacket plays a specific role as well. The knotted buttons on the jacket, there main purpose is to keep the jacket closed. There also meant to survive the frequent washing of the uniform. The apron being worn apart of the chef’s uniform is just kind of like another form of protection for keeping your uniform clean. Now in modern times in the kitchen checkered pants are hardly worn. Now a day’s chef’s just wear pants that are comfortable.
