    A move to trade liberalisation since the 1970s in Australia has drastically changed the structure of the economy. Structural change involves changes in the patterns of production that reflect changes in technology, consumer demand, global competitiveness and other factors. Protection polices affect the natural change in the structure of an economy, often leading to a decline in globally competitive industries. In 2011-12 Australia’s net tariff assistance was $1.1 billion, a very small percentage of GDP (less than 0.1%). Tariff levels in Australia have fallen from a massive 36% in 1968-9 to 1.8% in 2011, thus illustrating why Australia is one of the most open economies in the world. However, this has caused both positive and negative effects; the positive being that Australian industries have become more competitive and efficient as they are forced to focus on their comparative advantage; the negative is that heavily protected industries have suffered decline and job losses.…

    My perspective on international trade, free trade, and tariffs have all remained the same and I do still believe that foreign trade is very important because it allows of have a wider or greater variety of goods that we are able to purchase and choose from and I am also for free trade because I believe that this practice contributes to allowing us a greater variety and also lowers the price of goods. I am against tariffs because although they do help to protect domestic businesses and industries, I also believe this may decrease competition therefore causing a decline in the quality domestic products because domestic manufacturers do not have to work as hard on making products more appealing to consumers because the lower price of the good compared to price of foreign goods, which would be high because of the tariff, would simply make to the product more attractive to buyers. If a foreign country can produce an item cheaper than we can produce it, that item should be allowed into the country because rather than having American workers focusing of that producing that item at a higher cost, it allows us to focus on and specialize in specific items that we can produce more efficiently than other countries, which would make us a more globally competitive. I believe that a tariff protects domestic workers because it limits their competition by making their product significantly cheaper than imported foreign products. Tariffs hurt domestic consumers because for example they may force an individual to purchase a domestic good that may be of a lesser quality that a foreign good, simple because they may not be able to afford the foreign good of higher quality. A tariff would greatly decrease a domestic producer’s incentive to get more efficient because the tariff would decrease the amount of competition domestic manufacturers…

    There are many methods that a government can provide to protect domestic producers from international trade. The first method of protection is a tariff which is a tax imposed on imported goods. This method has been used by governments to increase the price of imports to allow domestic producers to be able to produce goods and sell it without such high competition. They can increase their supply of goods in the market and also charge a higher price. There is one main effect from this protectionist policy in the global economy and numerous effects on the domestic economy. Since the price of the imported good is higher within the domestic economy, consumers pay higher prices and will be less likely to purchase the imported good. This will lead to lower supplies of imports and less trade within the global economy. As Fig.1 shows, when imports are introduced, the quantity supplies by domestic producers significantly falls however the tariff raises the price of the imports and domestic producers can supply more.…
