The children, Gabriel and Luca, did schoolwork upstairs, but more often played noisily with good friends they had made. The smallest doorway I ever stepped through was less than one inch high, and the gabled cottage surrounding it was only eight inches at the top of its peaked, shingled roof. Carved from a single piece of dark stained mahogany, the cottage was one of a pair of bookends belonging to my mother. Clara had her nose stuck in a book and cramming a bagel into her mouth. “Morning,” Alisha greeted, pouring herself a bowl of Cheerios. Clara just nodded and mumbled a hello, mouth still full. Alisha awaited them at the door, but Mrs. Wilson waved her on, “I'm going to drive Marsha myself, you go on before you’re late.” Alisha nodded, waved goodbye, and walked out the door. Then she boarded the yellow bus, made her way to an empty seat next to a blonde headed girl. The girl moved over to make room, Alisha sat down and they sat in awkward silence until the blonde haired girl spoke. “Hi Alisha, I’m Lilith King, although everyone calls me Lily,” Lilith shook Alisha’s…
