ILM Higher Apprenticeship.

Level 5

Understanding the
Management role to improve
Management performance.

Glyn Thomas
Introduction.

I am undertaking the Institutive of Leadership Management (ILM) Higher Apprenticeship Level 5 as an employee of the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST).

I am substantively employed as a Paramedic working as a sole responder on a rapid response vehicle, however I have just complete a two and a half year secondment in a managerial role as a Research Support Officer for a collaborative research study between a local University and 3 large UK Ambulance Services. As such, the content of my assignments will be based retrospectively on the experiences and development which I have encountered within this secondment position.

WAST is a Welsh Government funded organisation which has been given NHS Trust status. It’s 2500 staff serve over 3 million people who inhabit the 8,023 square miles which make up Wales. This area, which is a diverse mix of urban, semi rural and rural, has a 750 mile perimeter of coastline.

Understand the specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling an organisation to achieve its goals.

In the later stages of the 2010 / 2011 financial year, WAST published it’s visionary document ‘Working Together For Success 2001 – 2016’ which intended to portray a clear and uncomplicated story to the people who use our services, and indeed all stakeholders, of what improvements we want to make and the benefits that these will have. As part of the document, it outlines our corporate vision and 3 clear objectives to be met by 2016:-

The Vision:
An ambulance service for the people of Wales which delivers high quality care wherever and whenever it is needed.

What does this mean by 2016?
We will move from being perceived as simply a transport service to a provider of high-quality health care and scheduled transport services.

Our Objectives:
We will concentrate on achieving three

The free group with two generators a and b is composed of all finite strings that are formed from the four symbols a, a−1, b and b−1 given that no a is directly next to an a−1 and no b is directly next to a b−1. Two such strings can be concatenated and converted into a string of this type by repeatedly replacing the "forbidden" substrings with the empty string. For example: abab−1a−1 concatenated with abab−1a yields abab−1a−1abab−1a, which contains the substring a−1a underlined in the example, and so the “forbidden” string gets cancelled and reduced to abab−1bab−1a, which again contains the substring b−1b underlined in the example, which then gets reduced to abaab−1a. It can be checked that the group formed from the set of those strings with…

Global variables are variables that are visible to every module in the program and its scope is the entire program so that all of the modules within the program can access a global variable. They can be declared in modules by simply setting up an assignment box and adding in the variables to the modules. In Pseudocode, you will simply write out the particular variable you want to declare and its value. Many programmers go against the idea of using global variables in modules but there are a few good sides to using global variables. For one, the global variables are very easy to find within modules and can be accessed throughout all of them. Global variables also make it easier to update…

Centralization sums up my primary reason for implementing Active Directory. The Active Directory structure makes it possible for you to achieve truly centralized management of users, regardless of how big your client’s network has become. If you've worked with Windows NT before, you know that in Windows NT a domain is a completely independent entity. While it's possible to create a trust relationship between domains that exist on a common network, the domains are never truly integrated with each other because there is no higher authority that manages the domains.…

Working as an operations trainer for Airline Services Ltd (ASL), my job is to travel around to many of the UK’s major airports to deliver training and development of front line staff. Training within the aviation industry is of critical importance as many of our staff work in a hazardous environment involving live aircraft and heavy machinery. A great deal of the training I deliver is directly related to ASL company operating procedures to ensure that all staff are working to company standards and ensuring their safety and the safety of others. ASL provide a number of services to various major airlines, which range from the very basic (cleaning) to more complex services such as de-icing. The range of complexity in the services that ASL provides, results in a wide range of learner levels, where some staff may find aspects difficult to understand. Within ASL’s workforce there is a great deal of diversity in terms of education level, work experience, age, race, gender and previous knowledge from previous jobs that can make training challenging. It is of huge importance that when delivering training, it is specific to the task that the learner is expected to carry out on a daily basis and at the same time gives them the opportunity to question and discuss aspects of their role openly and not to feel in doubt, criticised or intimidated when voicing their opinion. It is crucial that all staff comply with ASL’s company values of: Quality, Reliability & Performance, (ASL website ref) especially myself during the delivery of training as these values filter throughout the entire company and can make all the difference when securing customer contracts and meeting expectations.…

Before any teaching session begins I would establish some ground rules with each new group of learners. I would explain the reasons for having these and promote discussion about what I expect from them as learners and what they can expect from me as tutor. I would most likely opt for a flip chart to write these down and use this activity to encourage participation by asking the group what they feel is important to them in terms of respect for each others individuality and what they feel is acceptable behaviour, this could include learners writing the groups ideas onto the flip chart or writing their ideas down, collating them and selecting the most appropriate and relevant ones which would then form the basis of an agreement. Examples of ground rules being respecting for each other, turning mobile phones to silent, not interrupting each other and allowing opinions to be expressed, do we allow swearing and if so at what level do we draw the line. Having established these ground rules I would suggest to the group that I draw up an agreement in the form of a list that we all adhere to and can refer to. I would also agree with the group the consequences of infringement of the agreement, this may be in 3 stages, 1 being polite reminder of our agreement, 2 being a discussion in private between myself and the learner and 3 if the infringement continued the learner would be asked to leave the course. This would underpin what the group agree to as appropriate behaviour and that they have set the boundaries and consequences…
