Semester Writing Assignments

This semester, you will have several writing assignments, the first of which you’ve already completed! For each of these assignments, you are expected to put forth both thought and effort. Most importantly, remember that these papers are assigned to you, so they should be in your own words.

1) Two of the assignments due in this course are directly related to one another: Part 1. Write a brief essay that addresses these questions: What does biology mean to you? Does biology influence you? How so? Or why not? How will learning about biology influence your future? (10 points) DUE TODAY in class - HARDCOPY

Part 2. Write a brief essay (2 pages typed MAX) that addresses these questions: How has your view of biology changed (address those things you discussed in part 1 of this assignment)? How do you think biology will influence you in your future? What do you see as your role in biology? (20 points) DUE FRIDAY, December 13 (midnight) - DROPBOX

2) EurekAlert Assignment- EurekAlert (http://www.eurekalert.org/) is a web page operated by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. The most recent advances in all areas of science are posted here for the public to learn about. During this semester, you will be required to submit to me a total of 3 brief (~250 words) reports on 3 different articles that interest you on EurekAlert (these can be from ANY subject – you are not restricted to biology). Your report should briefly summarize the article, discuss any connections that the information may have to what we have been discussing in class (if there are any), and discuss why you found the article interesting. On the report you should also include the name of the article, author (if available), and date released. These reports will be “due” to the dropbox on the following Fridays: 9/6, 11/8, 12/6. I do, however, encourage you to submit these reports at your leisure throughout the semester, rather

Begin your study of biology this year by reading Chapter 1. It will serve as a reminder about biological concepts that you may have learned in an earlier course and give you an overview of what you will study this year. As you read each chapter, take note of the headings for each section, as these will clue you in to the big idea you should grasp from reading that section. One good strategy is actually to read through the review at the end of the chapter before diving into the material. Type the information in using a color other than black text. Alternately, print it out, handwrite your answers, and then scan in the resulting document as a .pdf or .jpeg to submit to Moodle. 1. In the overview, Figure 1.3 recalls many of the properties of life. Label (by inserting a text box) the seven properties illustrated here, and give a different example of each. Concept 1.1 Themes connect the concepts of biology 2. What are emergent properties Give two examples. What do emergent properties have to do with being alive 3. Life is organized on many scales. Figure 1.4 zooms you in from viewing Earth from space all the way to the level of molecules. As you study this figure, write in a brief definition of each level. biosphere ecosystem community population organism organs/organ systems tissues cells organelles molecules 4. Our study of biology will be organized around recurring themes. Make a list here of the themes that are presented, and give an example (different from that in your text) that illustrates each theme. Watch for these themes throughout your study this entire year. This will help you see the big picture and organize your thinking. (Go to the Summary of Key Concepts at the end of the chapter for a concise look at the themes.) Theme 1 Organisms interact with their environments, exchanging matter and energy. A deer eats a plant and after it processes the food it releases the waste and that waste is used as nutrients for other plants to…

    Natural Selection Paper

Natural selection is considered one of the most important processes for a variety of species and the environment which allows the fittest organisms to produce offspring. To prevent a species from extinction, it is necessary for them to adapt to the surrounding environment. The species which have the ability to adapt to new surroundings will be able to pass their genes through reproduction. Within the process of natural selection, it is possible for the original genetic make-up of a species to become altered. The team will report on the different processes of basic mechanisms of evolution, how natural selection results in biodiversity and why biodiversity is important to continued evolution. The sources of genetic variation such as mutations and sexual recombination will also be reviewed.…
