Military members who fail to obey the lawful orders of their superiors risk serious consequences. Article 90 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) makes it a crime for a military member to WILLFULLY disobey a superior commissioned officer. Under Article 90, during times of war, a military member who willfully disobeys a superior commissioned officer can be sentenced to death. Article 91 makes it a crime to WILLFULLY disobey a superior Noncommissioned or Warrant Officer. Article 92 makes it a crime to disobey any lawful order (the disobedience does not have to be "willful" under this article). These articles require the obedience of LAWFUL orders. In a military environment following orders is essentially the top priority. Insubordination is generally defined as a willful or intentional failure to obey a lawful and reasonable request of a supervisor.1 Following orders shows that the organization is well structured and disciplined. Sometimes though an order comes down from above that you may feel is not ethical or it goes against your standard thought of what is right or wrong. Here I plan to discuss my thoughts on this topic as well as supporting my claim that through the use of utilitarianism, a solution to this issue could be reached.…

To what degree should people follow orders of superiors due to their authority? A Few Good Men is a movie where the moral difference between right and wrong is very unclear in the name of following authority. Professors of sociology, Kelman and Hamilton worked together on “The My Lai Massacre: A Military Crime of Obedience” where they tried to apply reason to the soldiers who committed a massacre of unarmed women and children during the Vietnam War. Theodore Dalrymple is a physician who wrote “Just Do What the Pilot Tells You” by analyzing Milgram’s electric shock torture experiment to shine light on when is right to obey to authority, while he emphasizes not to follow authority blindly. These pieces can be used to understand how Marines were able to kill a fellow Marine in Rob Reiner’s A Few Good Men.…

”The Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States”, is arguably the single most important military doctrine ever created. There have been many important manuals and regulations written since its creation, but none with as much impact and significance. Baron Von Steuben wrote “The Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States”. Von Steuben volunteered for service in the Continental army at the perfect time. The current Inspector General for the army was drastically failing at his duties; the Soldiers and army as a whole were suffering from his failings. Von Steuben, a former Prussian officer with immense staff experience was just the man to replace the current Inspector General…

Being in the military we live by a different set of regulations and laws. In 1950 President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). The UCMJ allows the Commander to make the decision for serious and minor offenses. As a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) how do we address the necessity of punishment when a soldier commits an offense. AR 600-2 introduces us to tools that we as leaders use to focus the attention of Soldiers and inspire compliance with Army standards. Corrective Actions and Corrective Training,…

Why it is important to follow proper instruction procedures in the military is for many reasons. As a soldier it is our responsibility to not only follow instruction/orders, but to execute the command. Not following orders can result into consequences not only for the soldier whom committed not following instructions, but also it can put others at risk too. Like your N.C.O. in charge of you, to your Team Leader, to your Section Sergeant, to your Platoon Sergeant, to your 1st Sergeant, to your Company Commander, to your Brigade Commander, and so on. Not only can your N.C.O. in charge of you, your Team Leader, your Section Sergeant, your Platoon Sergeant, your 1st Sergeant, your Company Commander, and your Brigade Commander could all get into trouble for your actions of not following direct instructions/orders. But some may lose rank in the process including the soldier whom didn’t follow the specific instructions/orders giving by a soldier higher rank than that individual soldier. Also when you are down range deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, North Correa, and other combat places we have our troops fighting the war at, not only can a soldier lose rank. In fact not following directions/orders you could get a soldier fighting along side of you in the war killed in combat. Try to explain to a spouse, or a mother and father, better yet the soldiers kids that the reason why your parent father or mother isn’t coming home to see you is because you flailed to follow proper instructions/ orders giving to you and that is why your parent father or mother isn’t coming home to you. Not only is it important to follow instructions/orders, but you as the soldier could lose rank. Such as your Company Commander can take all your rank away only by going through a reduction board. Give you 14 days extra duty and lost of one rank. Give you 7 days of extra duty and lost of one rank. One month of no pay. Or two months of no pay. Be put on…

Following orders is of the utmost importance in the military. Obedience is what enables the military to operate in an organized and effective manner which is clearly very important during challenging military situations. While an individual can question the notion of obedience in daily life, this luxury is often not available in the military where the grand goals and aims require smooth internal functioning and hierarchical coordination. Indeed, many of the standards that would be frowned upon outside the military are essential to the work's success within. For example, punishment is not deemed to be a positive occurrence in an average person’s life, whereas the military guide maintains that punishment strengthens one's determination and discipline and enables a person to learn and fully take the importance of following orders in. Not following orders is not an optional choice that recruits can make upon joining the army. The act of disobedience is considered to be an infractions and a person who placed himself in such a situation can find himself facing Article 15 charges. Thus, respect and obedience is of the utmost significance in the military as it helps maintain the internal structure and enables the military therefore to carry out its operations in confidence.…

There are many reasons why a soldier, (doesn't matter the rank) should obey orders from anyone above him or her in the chain of command. Sometimes its good to listen to people soldiers below you too because they maybe smarter at the task then you are. One reason is that the military is revolved around higher ranking soldiers leading the lower ranking soldiers, they’re more experienced in the military then I am and been deployed more than i have. If everyone in the military just did their own thing then we wouldn't be a successful army and then our country wouldn't be as strong as it is. Every higher up gives an order for a reason, we may not like the reason but in the end most of the orders and decisions will be smart ones i guarantee. We were taught as children to obey our higher-ups. Starting from our parents, teachers, managers, police officers and etc… So how does this relate to the military? Well, when a person enlists in the United States Military, active duty or reserve, they take the following oath, “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.” Right there you are making a promise to the United States Military. Before you or I even put on the uniform, you promise you’ll obey the orders of the President and the orders of the officers appointed over you. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Brand new privates are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day one of boot camp. Almost every soldier can tell you that obedience was drilled into their…
