If I Were a Millionaire
We often hear elderly people advising the young ones to forget the past, ignore the future and care for the present. But there is hardly any one who has no ambition for a higher status than the present one. This constant struggle for a higher position sticks to man till the last day of his life. This is true of every human being right from the man in the street to the most celebrated ones of the world. This struggle, in fact, is essential for achieving the more pious objectives in life.
I belong to the middle strata of the Indian society. I can never think of earning millions of rupees. But god has his own ways. Who knows, I might win a lottery! And if I ever win it, I cannot say whether I would be able to enjoy it. Let me suppose that I am fortunate to win a lottery of millions of rupees! I shall try to spend it in the most judicious manner so that I am able to derive maximum pleasure out of it.
My friends advise me that first of all, I should try to improve my living conditions .I should have a huge mansion to live in, a car for the family and gadgets used in modern living. But my concept of life is quite different. Instead of improving my lot, I am interested in uplifting the poor masses of the country.
India is a developing country. There are many people in India who hardly get two square meals a day. How could they enjoy the comfort and luxuries of life? They are poorly fed and ill-clad. A large number of these people live in villages where the main occupation is agriculture. In villages, the old bullock-carts are still used though the advanced countries have adopted mechanized farming. I shall offer them loans at a very nominal interest so as to enable them to purchase tractors, fertilizers and better seeds. This scheme would save the villagers from the wicked village money lenders and would also increase their agricultural production levels. I shall invest a good portion of money in setting up a hospital with all the modern facilities. I shall also

How can people make the life of others better? This is an important question that everybody has to ask themselves. However, not everyone can to answer it. It sounds easy, but it is not. Mahatma Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” This phrase is the beginning of many changes in their attitudes. For example, some people donate organs, other people work as volunteers in natural disasters, and others opt to donate relief aid to children or seniors in natural disasters or holidays.…

Changez professes himself a ‘lover’ of America to his anonymous listener at the start of the novel. To begin with, for Changez, the journey from Pakistan to Princeton (and then to Underwood Samson) was about “a dream come true. Princeton inspired in me the feeling that my life was a Rilm in which I was the star and everything was possible.” Later, Changez calls the dream his “American dream.” Changez’s life before 9/11 is a life of possibilities, not the least of which is the possibility of achieving status – “Underwood Samson had the potential to transform my life as surely as it had transformed his, making my concerns about money and status things of the distant past.”…

*ASHISH SHARMA (R.R.M. COLLEGE, Neemuch) Agriculture plays an important role in the development of the Indian economy. It accounts for about 19-21 per cent of GDP and about two thirds of the population is dependent on the sector. The importance of farm credit as a critical input to agriculture is reinforced by the unique role of Indian agriculture in the macroeconomic framework and its role in poverty alleviation. Agricultural finance is a subset of rural finance dedicated to financing agricultural related activities such as input supply, production, distribution, wholesale, processing and marketing. Financial service providers face distinct challenges when dealing with this sector. For example, the seasonal nature of production and the dependence on biological processes and natural resources leaves producers subject to events beyond their control such as droughts, floods or diseases. The modern agriculture has increased the use of inputs specially for seed, fertilizers, irrigational water, machineries, implements etc. which has increased demand for agricultural credit. The adoption of modern technology, which is capital intensive, has commercialized agricultural production in India. Besides, the farmer's income is seasonal while his working expenses are spread over time. In addition, farmer's inadequate savings require the uses of more credit to meet the increasing capital requirements. Furthermore, credit is a unique resource, since it provides the opportunity to use additional inputs and capital items now and to pay for them from future earnings.…

If wishes were horses, even beggars would ride. But sometimes dream come true. My wishes are hopelessly small. But there is no check on one’s fancy. Fancy is my luxury. I wish I were a billionaire! As a poor man, I have often experienced that Rich men are generally selfish to the extent of being cruel. Their outlook on life is not human but materialistic. They forget that to be rich is not to be in human. When I am rich, I shall not forget god and god’s men. I long to lead some days in comfort. Money will end the state of uncertainty in which I live. Riches are a panacea. Poverty loses friends and makes one disrespectable and unacceptable in society. Wealth attracts and makes one honorable. If I were a billionaire, I would be in the company of rich friends and would be honorable. But being a millionaire is only a part of my desire. I know I get education under very difficult circumstances. So I shall open schools and colleges for the education of all. My great aim in life is to establish a university in the model of ancient Indian universities. I want to go back to our old culture which was once the pride of the world. A wealthy man can do much good to this world. Wealth often spoils man. Money along with comforts and care brings evil also. Rich men are generally victims to one evil or the other. I have natural dislike for the base and the disreputable. I was born human and shall live a pious and noble life. This duty openly man owns to god. I shall fulfill this duty. I shall set a noble example before others and shall be a brilliant light for misguided millionaires. I would very much wish to encourage social service in the country. I shall make a trust which will look after the welfare of orphans. It is a pity that in our country wealthy persons do not possess charitable qualities. I shall lead a noble life and cut down my own expenses so that I may help others to live better.…

    * "It is the young, the strong, and healthy, of sharp intellect that will reach the Lord", say the Vedas. This is the time to decide your future — while you possess the energy of youth, not when you are worn out and jaded, but in the freshness and vigour of youth. Work — this is the time; for the freshest, the untouched, and unsmelled flowers alone are to be laid at the feet of the Lord, and such He receives. Rouse yourselves, therefore, or life is short. There are greater works to be done than aspiring to become lawyers and picking quarrels and such things. A far greater work is this sacrifice of yourselves for the benefit of your race, for the welfare of humanity. Life is short, but the soul is immortal and eternal, and one thing being certain, death, let us therefore take up a great ideal and give up our whole life to it.…

«It is a dangerous thing to order the lives of others and I have often wondered at the self-confidence of politicians, reformers and suchlike who are prepared to force, upon their fellows measures that must alter their manners, habits, and points of view. I have always hesitated to give advice, for how can one advise another how to act unless one knows that other as well as one knows oneself? Heaven knows, I know little enough of myself: I know; nothing of others. We can only guess at the thoughts and emotions of our neighbours. Each one of us is a prisoner in a solitary tower and he communicates with the other prisoners, who form mankind, by conventional signs that have not quite the same meaning for them as for himself. And life, unfortunately, is something that you can lead but once; mistakes are often irreparable, and who am I that I should tell this one and that how he should lead it? Life is a difficult business and I have found it hard enough to make my own a complete and rounded thing; I have not been tempted to teach my neighbor what he should do with his. But there are men who flounder at the journey's start, the way before them is confused and hazardous, and on occasion, however unwillingly, I have been forced to point the finger of fate. Sometimes men have said to me, what shall I do with my life? And I have seen myself for a moment wrapped in the dark cloak of Destiny. Once I know that I advised well.»Recently I also gave good advice.…
