David Beckham is one of the most famous soccer players in the world, not only because of his expertise and performances on the field, but for his personality and involvement in advertisements as well. In fact, he is among the highest paid athletes on the planet mainly due to sponsorships. The definition of “brand” could be: A trademark or a distinctive name identifying the product or the manufacturer of the product. Nevertheless, if brands are not in the products they occupy people’s minds. Moreover, brands engage in loyalty based on emotional ties and consumer commitment (Kapfener 11). The distinctive case study of David Beckham explicates how a celebrity became a well-known brand through self-motivation and corporate support. In this essay I will examine the “Beckham brand” and how this brand was created in the first place. Through world-class soccer accomplishments and multiple off-field personas, Beckham has not just become a brand but a portfolio of brands powered by athletic proficiency, strong character and physical appearance. His increased popularity and “iconic image” add a significant brand value and consideration to “the various companies he is a spokesman for and the multitude of different products and services that he endorses (The Multiple Brand Personalities of David Beckham).” The reputation he developed in the marketing industry throughout the years, made him a “target” for every marketing company. He is no longer the man named David Beckham, he is a brand onto a man named David Beckham who embodies the essence of an excellent athlete. His brand, implicitly exceeds reality.…

Academic writing is an art of expressing and transforming thoughts and ideas into physical form to deliver information logically and scientifically. This skill needs to be refined and practiced constantly regularly. After three months of taking ESL 273, I have accumulated various experiences in writing advanced sentences and organizing academic essays which are really necessary for me to perform well in the next English course, ESL 5, as well as other classes. As a result, I think I am well-prepared and ready for the next coming course ESL 5. During the ESL 273 course, one of my strengths which is the ability of using various examples as well as explanations to reinforce my main ideas and make them more persuasive is gradually improved. For example, in my writing assignment titled “Littlemindedness- Little Limit to Go Over”, I used my personal experiences such as the diminution of discriminative thoughts and the opportunities I felt when I went from high school to college. Moreover, I also used the reality happening to the curriculum in my home country, Vietnam, in order to strengthen my attitude that coming to De Anza College can generate a significant chance to my life. In addition, I realized how important and essential transitional words are in writing an academic essay and gluing my ideas, sentences, and paragraphs together. Thus, I always keep trying to use a variety of transitional words and phrases in my essay to make it become more coherent and cohesive and avoid making discrete information. In the article “The Advantageous Policy on Immigrants”, I used some transitional words like consequently, in addition, moreover, as a result, after all, and nevertheless to create smoothness for my essay. As a result, the quality of my essays will be improved, and I will be successful in expressing and illustrating the flow of my thoughts. However, after completing 4 in-class essays, I realize that…

Academic Writing Skills Even if you have perfect English skills you will not get top grades for your assignments if you do not answer the question asked. Many students prepare pages of perfect script and are then shocked when they receive poor grades – the usual problem is that they have not answered the question set for them to do. So how do you get this task right? A good answer will always: Follow the specific directions/tasks Identify and address the subject/topic in the question Use the required number of words Identify the main points of the question and include these in the answer • Cite and reference correctly A very good trick is to make sure that you include the words used in the question in your answer. For instance, if you are asked in the question to evaluate something, make sure that answer includes something like “the following evaluation”. You can use the question as the plan for your answer – answer in the same logical order that the question was written. Do not try to re-interpret the question. Academic assignments often use specific words to direct or guide students. These are called ‘direction words’ and they define the boundaries of your answer – these are common instructions and they need to be followed to maximize your possible grade. Below is a useful table of words (University of Canberra, 2007) that tells you what kind of essays you are asked to write. As a writer I can say four years of learning English literature in high school, did not give me a clear perception over any of the stuff I had to prepare for when taking my first English literature writing course, when I say this I mean I was clueless going into my second semester of college when I signed up for the course I was confident at the start of the class then begin to realize my weaknesses and my strong abilities as a writer towards the end of the semester. Critically I will analyze previous works obtained in class this semester, but also as a writer how this college experience has pushed me to become consistent as a student personally, responsibly, critically, and quantitatively all having to do with the involvement of literacy.…

My current reading and writing skills are in my opinion on par for my level of expertise. I have a fairly in depth knowledge of how to talk to someone using correct words and sentences. I completed an associate’s degree from another college and that have helped to expand my horizons in this field. My reading skills are on par as well, I like to read books ranging from school curriculum to murder mystery novels by James Patterson. I grew up with just my mother playing both parent roles in my home and because of that I believe that she has always pushed me to strive to learn more and do better with my education, thus constantly making me read when I was younger. I don’t think that I realized the ramifications of those actions because I remember vividly that I disliked reading in my younger years.…

An essay is a piece of writing made up of a number of paragraphs. Each paragraph has a specific role in an essay. In a five-paragraph essay, the first paragraph is an introduction; the second, third, and fourth paragraphs form the body of the essay; and the fifth paragraph is a conclusion (see diagram on page 4). This book will focus exclusively on the five-paragraph essay. Although essays may vary in length, the five-paragraph essay structure can be adapted for longer or shorter essays.…

Literature we learn in schools mostly represents events of real life. Sometimes the speaker, the author, and the writer can exaggerate but they frequently present their work based on real life occurrences. Literature cannot ever be “an annoying obstacle” instead it should be seen as an enjoyable master piece. Furthermore, literature should be considered as an important tool for all those who are aiming to become a successful professional in any field. Personally, from the Literature classes, I have learned that people do not need to reach a consensus, and that everyone’s point of view count.…
